Cowboys enjoy near perfect Sunday without even touching a football

With the 49ers and Eagles losing in Week 6, the Cowboys enjoyed a near perfect Sunday without even playing. However, the pressure is now on for them to get it done against the Chargers on Monday.

Last week’s demolition at the hands of the 49ers undoubtedly tempered the Cowboys’ Super Bowl ambitions. Mike McCarthy’s team came up (way) short in their first real test of the season, losing 10-42 to San Francisco in what Dak Prescott called “the most humbling game I’ve ever been a part of”.

However, things change quickly in football. While the sour taste of that defeat will no doubt still be lingering, two results around the league in Week 6 will give the Cowboys cause for optimism.

49ers and Eagles lose as Cowboys enjoy near perfect Sunday

Through no fault of their own, and without even touching a football, the Cowboys enjoyed a pretty great Sunday in Week 6.

That’s because heavy favorites and NFC rivals the Eagles and 49ers both lost this weekend. The Eagles lost their first game of the season as the Jets scored 17 straight to come away with 20-14 win. Jalen Hurts threw three interceptions, including a costly one with 1:50 left in the fourth quarter and the Eagles leading.

It was the Jets first ever victory against the Eagles as Philly moved to 5-1 for the season, just a game ahead of the Cowboys.

The seemingly unstoppable Niners also dropped a game, coming unstuck with a late missed field goal as they lost to the Browns, 19-17.

It was the 49ers first loss of the season, however, perhaps more crucially, they also lost a number of key players through injury. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel and running back Christian McCaffrey suffered shoulder and oblique/rib injuries respectively, with neither player able to finish the game.

Monday night’s game vs Chargers is potentially season-defining

While it’s unbecoming to revel in another team’s injury issues, the results are a nice reminder that all is not lost after last week’s blowout loss.

However, those results put an even greater onus on the Cowboys to get a W in the Monday Night Football game against the Chargers.

It’s a potentially season-defining game, with a win ensuring the Cowboys enter Week 7’s bye week with a 4-2 record, one game behind the Eagles in the NFC East and within touching distance of the 49ers in the NFC standings.

Lose, though, and the same old questions about the Cowboys’ inability to get it done when it matters most will rear their ugly head once again.

It’s a hugely important game.
