After working out a trio of defenders, the Cowboys have announced the signing of former Chargers linebacker Mikel Jones to their practice squad.

The Cowboys are adding former Chargers linebacker Mikel Jones according to a report from The Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken. It comes after Dallas worked out three free-agent linebackers Jones, Jimmy Phillips Jr and Tyler Murray on October 3, 2023.

Cowboys announce signing of former Chargers linebacker to practice squad

Gehlken wrote on Twitter: ‘Cowboys worked out three linebackers today: Mikel Jones, Tyler Murray and former SMU standout Jimmy Phillips Jr. Jones was then signed to practice squad. He bolster position’s depth after the Bengals claimed Devin Harper off waivers last week. Jones spent camp with Chargers.’

22-year-old Jones went undrafted out of Syracuse in the 2023 NFL Draft. During his four years at Syracuse, Jones recorded 298 tackles, eight and half sacks and four interceptions.

He signed with the Chargers soon after the draft but was among the team’s final roster cuts during the preseason.

Ahead of the draft, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote of Jones: “Team leader who plays bigger than his listed size.

“Jones has plenty of toughness and thump behind his pads, but getting off of blocks and making plays against NFL quickness could be too much for Jones to handle. He lacks fluidity and twitch. The game will get tougher for him when it’s not played inside the tackle box.”

Bengals claim Devin Harper off waivers from Cowboys

It comes after Cincinnati claimed linebacker Devin Harper off waivers from the Cowboys. Dallas released the linebacker before Week 4 and planned to re-sign him to the team’s practice squad after passing through waivers.

However, the Bengals beat them to the punch.

Harper was a 2022 sixth-round NFL Draft pick out of Oklahoma State. He has appeared in six career regular-season games in Dallas, making three tackles. He’s played in all three games so far this season.
