Chris Broussard says Patrick Mahomes will be excited to play with two new Kansas City Chiefs players

The Kansas City Chiefs have extended Travis Kelce’s contract until 2025, turning him into the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. This move was a proof that KC intends to make history in the league and win their third Super Bowl in a row.

For 2024, Kansas City has secured a great squad, with the likes of Chris Jones, Travis Kelce, Hollywood Brown, Drue Tranquill, Mike Danna and, of course, Patrick Mahomes. The recently acquired players in the Draft also have everything to add positively to the team.

There are still those who don’t believe that the Chiefs aren’t favorites to win the Lombardi Trophy, given that no franchise has ever secured three consecutive titles in NFL history.

What KC can hold on to in 2024

Chris Broussard, on last Monday’s edition of the First Things First show, claimed that Kansas City could be the underdog for another season: “The only possible reason that the Chiefs cannot be favoured is that we’ve never seen the three-peat. That’s it: the feeling that it’s never happened, so nobody’s gonna win it three in a row.”

The analyst added: “I do think, though, there are reasons, even though the Chiefs are two-time defending Super Bowl champions, they still can play the underdog card.”

“A lot of people are doubting them. They’re not favorites. They, to me, are in a unique position for a defending champion. They have got crazy motivation this year. A lot of times a team that won a championship they talk about is hard to get up until you get this.”

Mahomes has in mind who he needs to overcome

Tom Brady is the GOAT of the NFL, that’s a fact. But that doesn’t mean Mahomes isn’t on his way to reaching the same level or even surpassing him.

Broussard, as an example, used references from the NBA to show the importance of having references in the game that motivate you to be better.

“They’re going for the three-peat. A QB that is chasing Tom Brady, that’s a benefit too. Like, LeBron got Jordan out there to chase. Jordan had Magic out there to chase. To have somebody to chase is huge because Mahomes is not gonna get complacent.”

There’s a lot of expectation surrounding Chiefs’ offense

In 2022, the Chiefs were by far the team that made the most explosive plays in the regular season (20+ yards). Last year they dropped to 16th place – and still won the SB.

Broussard also claimed that, with all the extensions and new players in the building, the franchise tends to be even more determined to go get the three-peat: “You’re coming off what, until the playoffs, was a bad season. They could really look at it like ‘we didn’t play well last year’. They did once the playoffs started, but they didn’t have a good sear.”

“I’m excited for him (Mahomes). He’s got to be excited about his new toys. ‘I got two burners and Hollywood Brown and (Xavier) Worthy like, man, I’m about to have some fun’. And so I think they have a lot of reason to be motivated.”
