Chiefs warned NFL Hall of Fame bound star on his last chance and could leave Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs are celebrating Super Bowl success – but how long can they keep their winning team together?

Quite often, winning the Super Bowl is short lived. Enjoy it while you can. Even when you are Kansas City.

Talk immediately turns to next season, with the franchise having to get down to the financial task of meeting various stars’ contract demands, with teams looking to tempt them away.

Teams are willing to pay big to sign Super Bowl champions, and often teams like the Chiefs have had success because they have been measured financially and not overstretched, and must make tough decisions in order to keep that identity.

Chris Jones contract a worry

One of the toughest decisions facing the Kansas City Chiefs is over Chris Jones, who was involved in a contract stand-off last off-season which saw him miss week one of the regular season, before a short-term solution was agreed.

A long-term solution is needed, for a player who saved one of his best season performances for the Super Bowl.

The situation was discussed on Pro Football Talk on NBC, with Mike Florio warning: “This is his last shot of getting paid, he’s not going to play until he’s 40 like Patrick Mahomes.”

Jones, 29, was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016 and has won three Super Bowls under Andy Reid.

Florio added that Jones could be tempted by financial offers despite promises of loyalty, adding: “‘How much will someone else pay to pry him away from the Chiefs?'”

Chris Simms paid tribute to his Super Bowl performance and had a strong prediction for his future.

He said: “He’s one of the best we’ve ever seen at the defensive tackle position, he’s going to the Hall of Fame. And they needed him in this one.

“He probably did play a little more snaps than he wanted to, but they were undermanned in the defensive tackle position, he is the best defensive tackle they have got in their team by far.”

We predict Jones and the Chiefs will find a way to figure this one out. He is just too important. But like all major contracts, it could take a while.
