Chiefs can match the 49ers for second-longest winning streak against a single opponent on Sunday

Riding a six-game winning streak and fresh off its best offensive showing of the season, the Chiefs should be brimming with confidence this weekend.

After only seven games in 2023, Andy Reid‘s crew are already running away with the AFC West crown, currently three games above the second-place Las Vegas Raiders.

They have an opportunity to pad that lead this weekend when they travel to Empower Field at Mile High for a date with the Denver Broncos.

Kansas City winning run

You would fancy Kansas City‘s chances to increase their winning streak to seven this weekend against the Broncos, which would be the longest for them in a single season since 2021 (eight).

They met the Broncos earlier this season, coming away with a 19-8 victory in mid-October at Arrowhead, their 16th straight victory against them.

Should the Chiefs defeat Denver again this weekend, they would have the second-longest NFL winning streak against a single opponent, drawing even with the San Francisco 49ers, who beat the Rams 17 times between 1990-98.

For the moment, the all-time record is held by the Miami Dolphins, who won 20 consecutive contests versus the Buffalo Bills between 1970 and 1979.

Patrick Mahomes has never lost to the Broncos in his career, and if he can keep that streak alive on Sunday, he’d set yet another NFL record.

The Chiefs pivot is 12-0 as a starter versus Denver, and with another victory this weekend, he’d be the first QB in league history to win his first 13 starts against one team.

Mahomes is currently tied with Otto Graham for that record, with the former Cleveland Browns QB going 12-0 in his first dozen meetings with the Chicago Cardinals from 1950 to 1955.

After Kansas City put up 483 yards in their victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, they should be feeling good about their chances to move the ball efficiently on Sunday, facing a Denver defense which has looked fragile all season.

The Broncos are 2-5 after seven encounters this year, putting them at the bottom of the AFC West in what has been anything but a memorable return to the sidelines for Sean Payton.

The man who led the New Orleans Saints to their only Super Bowl triumph during the 2009 campaign has had a rough go of it in Denver.

Heading into this encounter, Denver is dead-last in the NFL regarding yards allowed per game (424.7), while they are tied with the Carolina Panthers for the most points allowed per game (31.0).

Although their season hasn’t gone as they had hoped thus far, the Broncos are coming off a narrow victory in their previous encounter, holding the Green Bay Packers to just 17 points last Sunday (19-17).

Before the 2022 campaign, Mahomes had never beaten Russell Wilson as a starting quarterback.

Since Wilson joined the Broncos, Mahomes is undefeated against him and has a chance to win three in a row versus the Denver pivot on Sunday.
