Brett Veach praises the Free Agency signing the Chiefs are ‘lucky’ to have on the roster

KC, for the time being, doesn’t know who will occupy the WR1 position in the squad in 2024.

The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII despite not having the most feared and powerful offense in the league. Despite this, the group of wide receivers faced challenges and moments of fragility throughout 2023. Among the receivers, rookie Rashee Rice and tight end Travis Kelce stood out for their consistency in the team’s passing game.

In the final against the San Francisco 49ers, Mecole Hardman stood out, even though he didn’t get a lot of opportunities during the season. His decisive reception sealed the championship for the Chiefs. However, the WR is now free on the market.

Fully aware of the deficiencies in the air game, general manager Brett Veach acted quickly to strengthen the team and help Patrick Mahomes in the quest for the three-peat. The arrival of new pieces promises to increase the depth and effectiveness of the Chiefs’ offense for next season.

The promising explosive weapon for Mahomes

Kansas City led the NFL in dropped passes during the 2023 season. By chance, or not, Hollywood Brown had just become a free-agent after leaving the Arizona Cardinals in the offseason. KC’s GM put his best foot forward and brought in the player on a one-year contract.

Everything suggests that the Mahomes-Hollywood duo will deliver good results for the team’s offense. He appears to be a powerful target for the quarterback.

Veach, in an interview with Nick Shook of Around the NFL this past friday, spoke about Brown’s landing and explained his reasons for bringing him in: “Like every year, whether it’s free agency or the draft, if there’s an opportunity to add a playmaker for Pat (Mahomes), we’re always going to be looking for those options.”

He added: “(We) played it out, so to speak, at some other positions. I think we were lucky that Hollywood’s situation played out the way it did.”

“I think he’s going to be a great one-year addition for us and he’s going to set himself up nicely moving forward. I think we’re excited and like I said, every year is different and unique. I think with the resources we had available, we maximized what we can do this offseason.”

Scenarios that could jeopardise the WR unit in 2024

The legal situation involving Rice could be an impediment for the Chiefs as far as the receiving corps is affected. The roster still relies on Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney and Justin Watson, but it’s likely that Kansas City will select a WR in this week’s Draft.

The franchise holds the 32nd pick of the first round and, in addition to the wide receiver position, should focus on offensive tackle and linebacker.
