Analyzing if the Cowboys could land Bill Belichick as head coach

In an NFL market like Dallas, it’s no surprise to hear the biggest names in the sport being linked to this club.

After all, the Cowboys are America’s Team and perhaps the biggest, most universally well-known club in the NFL.

When you look at the Cowboys’ history though, the Super Bowl titles and the publicity they attract, it’s fair to say many people would identify them as a team they recognize.

This team’s legacy and the sway of owner Jerry Jones have allowed them to bring in some of the most prominent athletes and coaches from both talent and marketing levels.

Names like Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders and Terrell Owens are just some of the icons that played for this team.

Now, there’s another big fish in the coaching ranks being linked with Dallas.

The Coaching G.O.A.T.

Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, and Bill Parcels are giants in the coaching world and were all on the Cowboys’ sidelines at one time.

There are some rumblings that somebody with an even more impressive coaching resume than those names could take charge of this team,

Gary Myers is a former NFL columnist with 55 years of experience covering this league.

You might know him as a bestselling NY Times author with books like “Brady Vs Manning”, “How ‘Bout Them Cowboys” and “Once a Giant”.

Myers has extensive knowledge of the Cowboys and Patriots and believes Bill Belichick could be the next Dallas head coach.

In a Twitter post, he articulated his rationale behind the potential hiring

Is Belichick on Thin Ice?

To see Belichick not on the Patriots’ sidelines would feel bizarre, as he’s been a mainstay in New England for decades.

However, since Tom Brady left, the Pats’ reign as the most feared team in the NFL has also changed

Boston Globe columnist Ben Volin suggests Belichick would be fired if they lose to the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt.

That would give the Pats a 2-8 record for the season should they suffer another defeat.

Belichick has a record of 27-32 since the departure of Brady.

“If Bill Belichick is out in NE after the season and Robert Kraft looks to trade him (he’s under contract),” said Myers.

Super Bowl or Bust for Mike McCarthy?

While he doesn’t have as big of a resume as Belichick, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy previously won a Super Bowl in Green Bay and has had success on the Dallas sidelines.

According to Myers, though, unless the Cowboys win the Super Bowl this season, Jerry Jones’ patience in him will wear thin.

“He’s just an average coach who won just one Super Bowl in GB despite two years with Brett Favre and 11 with Aaron Rodgers,” Myers said about McCarthy.

Firing Bill Belichick would send shockwaves through the NFL, but coaches are hired to be fired.

Should Belichick become available, there’s no doubt plenty of teams across the league would be seeking his services, while it’s also true the Cowboys are in win-now mode.

The question is, how far would Jones be willing to go to land him?
