A look at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl history including their modern era and past success.

Chiefs Kingdom has flourished in recent seasons with the holy trinity consisting of Andy Reid, Travis Kelce and superstar quarter-back Patrick Mahomes.

This successful alliance has guided the Kansas City Chiefs to a dominating three Super Bowl final wins in the last five years. A record only matched by the considered ‘GOAT’ Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick, who in unison won three Vince Lombardi Trophies in the span of five years for the New England Patriots between 2015-2019.

1960-70s

The Chiefs’ Super Bowl journey began way back in 1967 when they squared off against the Green Bay Packers in the first ever Super Bowl. Although, this appearance was in no way concluded in a triumphant manner compared to their more recent history. Disappointingly, the Packers steam rolled the Chiefs in the maiden Super Bowl winning 35-10. Despite us recognising this match-up as the first ever contested ‘Super Bowl’, the initial name was more of a mouthful: ‘The AFL-NFL World Championship Game.’ This was prior to the AFL-NFL merger.

Fast forward four seasons and the Chiefs earned another shot at glory in Super Bowl 1970. Pro football Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson, under superb guidance by Hank Stram avenged the Chiefs bitter defeat. Securing glory with their own comfortable victory over the NFC Minnesota Vikings, 23-7.

Dawson secured the MVP bragging rights after throwing for 142 yards and a singular touchdown. A monumental victory not only for the Kansas City Chiefs themselves, but for the newly formed American Football Conference (AFC) soon to be. As next season was the first season the NFC and AFC would work together in tandem to strategise their footballing calendars. A Chiefs win was a statement to the founding NFL sides that the new AFC will continue to only get stronger.

The AFC did only get stronger and by 2002 all 32 teams which we proudly know today were cemented into the NFL. Therefore, competition grew and the Chiefs would fail to reach the pinnacle of American Football again for exactly half a decade. Chiefs Kingdom endured multiple turbulent and stagnating seasons; however, their passion, patience and loyalty was rewarded 50 years on from their last Super Bowl victory.

2019-2024

In the 2019 season, led by Patrick Mahomes in only his third season and second season as the Chiefs starting quarterback, the city rejoiced as they overcome the San Francisco 49ers. It was a closely contested match which saw the Chiefs roll out of Miami as World Champions for the second time in their history. Their star quarterback was rewarded with the MVP title and the Chiefs knew they had dynasty in their grasp. Victory at Super Bowl 54 was a landmark moment which established a reign of dominance for the team from Kansas for many seasons to come.

Consecutive Super Bowl appearances were on the cards as the Chiefs prepared to lace up against the best quarterback in NFL history, Tom Brady. The future Hall of Famer led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a showdown against the reigning champions. A Super Bowl which was staged to the world as the master vs the apprentice. However, the six-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady demonstrated his craftsmanship once again and secured his seventh title. A tough pill for Chiefs Kingdom to swallow after being denied successive trophies, nevertheless, there was no shame in losing to a ruthless Buccaneers defence while Brady pulled the strings on offence.

After brushing off the cobwebs and proceeding to be absent from the Super Bowl in 2021, the Chiefs found themselves matched up against the NFC’S number one seeded Philadelphia Eagles in 2022. Two of the most dominant offences squared off in a match which had both sets of fans experiencing every emotion. An offensive shootout which saw the Kansas City natives secure victory with a Harrison Butker game-winning field goal; final score 38-35. Mahomes would win MVP for the second time whilst also securing the regular season MVP, becoming only the second player since Kurt Warner to do so.

Super Bowl LVIII - San Francisco 49ers v Kansas City Chiefs

The opportunity to achieve consecutive Super Bowl titles emerged once again for the dominant dynasty. A rematch of Super Bowl LIV against the 49ers was to be played in Las Vegas for the very first time. A low-scoring start, which was predicted by many, as the 49ers held a 10-3 lead into the Usher halftime show. Overtime was on the cards as the Chiefs rallied to tie the score 19-19 at the end of regulation. On the opening overtime possession, the Red and Gold Army stalled and settled for a field goal. With the game on the line, Mahomes marched his side 75 yards and concluded with a three-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman. Owner Clark Hunt celebrated back-to-back Super Bowl wins, with his side the first to achieve this milestone since the New England Patriots in 2004/05. Mahomes has secured a hattrick of Super Bowl MVP’s after being awarded the accolade in 2024.

A stupendous feat achieved by the Kansas City Chiefs as their reign of dominance in the last five years shows no indication of ending.
