Former Patriots star could be an option after defensive tackle released by the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense is one of the most exciting of the decade and should be given more credit among the NFL’s defensive teams.

With the youngest defense in the league, the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII. According to NFL Research, the average age of the defensive unit was 25 years and 279 days.

It’s the second time the league’s youngest defense has reached a Super Bowl – the Colts were the first, in 2009.

But the presence of specific veterans changes the perspective of everything.

At the start of the offseason, KC secured a huge contract for defensive tackle Chris Jones worth up to $158.75 million.

He’s certainly the veteran who has the most influence on the DT unit.

Chiefs let go of defensive tackle who won’t be missed

On Monday, Kansas City waived defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs.

The player had already been involved in a series of incidents and legal problems that made his stay with the team untenable. There were two arrests in one month.

Buggs was signed by the franchise to its practice squad before the Week 18 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in January.

He didn’t play in that game or any of the others in the playoffs.

In February, the 27-year-old signed a reserve/future contract to stay in KC for the offseason program.

Let’s be honest, it’s not as if DT is going to make a difference in this squad that is already well stocked in the position.

Not least because the Chiefs aren’t at the point where they can afford and fight over a player who hasn’t even played for the team.

In 2024, nothing could be more important than the three-peat.

Of the six defensive tackles on the roster, four have five or more years’ experience in the NFL and certainly more credit – and titles – than Buggs.

Chris Jones and Derrick Nnadi have done their job very well.

Mike Pennel Jr, Matt Dickerson and Tershawn Wharton are solid veterans who already know the Chiefs’ dynamics.

A possible option to fill Buggs’ shoes

Lawrence Guy, former New England Patriots, appears to be a potential addition to KC’s defensive unit.

A reliable, experienced weapon who can offer advice in the locker room – as well as knowing what it’s like to play for a championship team.

I’m not even thinking about him being a starter or anything like that. Just an acquisition that could make sense in this historic moment for the Chiefs.
