A former Chiefs quarterback spoke last year about his time in Kansas City and in particular about the uniqueness of one of his former teammates.

The now-retired Alex Smith was the predecessor to the legendary Patrick Mahomes.

He played for the Kansas City Chiefs over five seasons and was the first QB for Andy Reid when his tenure began in 2013.

Mahomes sat behind Smith for one year learning the trade before his starting season in 2018.

Smith earned NFL Comeback Player of the Year after horror injury

The 39-year-old became a beacon of hope in 2020 showing great guts and determination to bounce back from a career-threatening injury.

In 2018 he fractured his tibia and fibula in his right leg during his first season after leaving Missouri for Washington.

Furthermore, he deservedly earned NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2020 which would be his last ever season.

Smith praised Travis Kelce’s off-script route running

In an interview in 2023 with SiriusXM NFL Radio, Smith discussed what life was like with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He discussed how he felt throwing passes to tight end Travis Kelce in his Chiefs’ days.

Smith stated: “Travis [Kelce] never runs the line on the paper but he is always open, he understands leverage, he understands the match-up he has.

“He [Kelce] used to play the quarterback position so I think that really helps him and constantly has such great vision and understanding of the play. Look at some of these routes, many fans have seen them, they look horrible.

“There’s times when he is supposed to break out and he doesn’t, but he’s open, he still deserves the football and he made the right decision. I think if he had gone anywhere else then I don’t know if he would have reached his potential.”

Smith worked with superstar Travis Kelce when the latter was a rookie out of Cincinnati.

Travis Kelce always made himself available downfield for Smith and Mahomes

According to Smith, the 34-year-old would go off script and determine what routes he would be running.

However, Kelce would manage to find himself open which would be a weapon for the Chiefs signal-caller.

It is a testament to Kelce that he would manage to make himself available to Smith despite going rogue from the original play design.

Nonetheless, the nine-time Pro Bowler now has another fruitful relationship with Smith’s successor Patrick Mahomes.

The pair have been one of the deadliest duos in the NFL and will be continuing their legacy into 2024.

Kelce running off script has been a massive asset to Mahomes when he scrambles outside the pocket looking for an opening downfield.
