Why Patrick Mahomes constantly wiggles his fingers between plays

Throughout his NFL career, we have seen Patrick Mahomes display numerous unique quirks on a regular basis.

Among them, you will notice the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback wiggle his fingers in between plays.

Throughout the 2023 season, many people on social media began noticing Mahomes’ finger wiggling and many wondering why.

Some Theories behind Mahomes’ Finger Wiggling

The constant wiggling by Patrick Mahomes is another one of the many things we associate with the two-time league MVP, with various thoughts behind it.

When the Chiefs beat the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this year, it sparked a massive conversation about the reason for that unique and regular habit by Mahomes.

“Why does Mahomes always twitch those two fingers? “one fan said on X.

“Patrick Mahomes fingers thing makes my blood run cold,” tweeted another fan.

“He telling the coach to send the play in his helmet got a headset in it,” remarked someone else.

Others suggest it’s a way to subtly get his players back into formation quickly, perhaps in a hurry-up offense.

Meanwhile, there were other humorous takes on why Mahomes does that.

“Calling the waiter over,” tweets one person.

“Mahomes is definitely doing morse code with his fingers,” someone else adds.

Knowing how superstitious athletes are in all sports, any of those thoughts could be the reason.

However sometimes, there is no rhyme or reason behind these habits.

It reminds me of the cadences we see from every quarterback, all unique in their own and for many bizarre ways.

Of course, there’s a reason behind them to get everyone ready before the snap, but how they come up with these calls like “here we go” “Blue 42” and so on seems random.

Is the Finger Wiggle a Decoy?

There’s no apparent reason why Mahomes wiggles his finger, though some ideas make more sense than others.

For me, huddling up to run a play seems to fit the bill.

Mahomes and the Chiefs always have a trick play or two up their sleeve, and they’re always thinking about how to get a leg up on opposing defenses.

More than any other NFL team, that’s necessary for Andy Reid’s group to be ahead of the opposition given their outstanding offensive units over the years.

Seeing how much the opposition prepares for the Chiefs, Matt Nagy, Mahomes, Reid, Travis Kelce and company need to find a way to get ahead.

It’s undoubtedly been a nightmare for opposing defenses in past seasons to prepare to face the KC offense.

In an NFL world of lip reading and telepathy, teams pull out all the stops to try to get an edge.

Maybe Mahomes’ wiggle, though, is purely a gesture to throw off the opposition.

Given how much we read body language in today’s NFL and look into everything, maybe that’s something Mahomes drew up just to make the opposition think it’s something when it’s not.

Whatever it may be, it’s something that’s had many thinking, and whether there’s meaning behind the wiggle or not, that alone works in the Chiefs’ favour.

Now, whether or not someone ever catches onto it is anybody’s guess.
