The apple did not fall from the tree when it pertains to Mahomes.

The elder Mahomes, who is originally from Lindale, Texas, was a more than competent sportsman as a youngster and played football, basketball, and baseball. He received scholarship offers to play all three sports collegiately but decided baseball was the sport for him.
The 52-year-old played for the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates during his MLB career, retiring in 2003. He had a 5.47 ERA and has 452 strikeouts in his MLB career, while having a 42-39 record.

He was married to Patrick’s mother Randi until 2006. Together they also had another son, Jackson.

The younger Mahomes could have followed in his father’s footsteps
The Chiefs QB could well have followed in his father’s footsteps and played in MLB. His main position was shortstop and in his senior year at Texas Tech produced a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts.
In 2014, Patrick Mahomes went to the draft. However, it was not expected he would be selected to the MLB thanks to his football commitments at Texas.
The Detroit Tigers picked him up in the 37th round of the draft, although Mahomes did not sign a deal with them. Sadly, he never actually played an MLB game. Luckily for him his career worked out pretty well.
