Position
Jared Wiley joins the Chiefs roster as a tight end and has the chance to be mentored by the greatest one of all time Travis Kelce.
The Chiefs had signed Irv Smith Jr. from free agency but inconsistent production does not instill the greatest confidence to support Kelce.
Draft pick number
Wiley had to wait until the fourth round for his name to be called in the NFL Draft but it was worth the wait to join the reigning Super Bowl champions.
Brett Veach picked the tight end when on the clock with the #131st overall pick of the draft.
Combine results
The six-foot-six talent did not post the most eye-catching NFL Combine scores but history has proved these are not the be-all and end-all.
He had the 7th-best combined overall score of 72 amongst tight ends in his class.
At 249 pounds, Wiley ran a speedy 4.62 in his 40-yard dash drill. The Chiefs adore speed across their receiving profiles, so what Wiley may lack in production he can make up for in athleticism.
Comparisons
In the Bleacher Report’s scouting profile of Jared Wiley, they describe him as a taller Austin Hooper.
The current New England tight end stands at six-foot-four, so Wiley measures two inches taller than his counterpart.
Hooper is a two-time Pro Bowler after being drafted in 2016 by the Atlanta Falcons.
Strengths
Despite being very tall, Wiley makes route running look easy and his smooth strides give him good YAC ability.
His speed allows him to navigate into the second level and offers a quick option for quarterbacks under pressure.
Moreover, his size and frame give him the potential to excel as a blocker making him a hybrid tight-end.
College record
Wiley had three years of college football experience in Texas before making the transfer to TCU.
In 2022, his first season at his new college, he played in all 15 games notching 4 starts. Wiley claimed 24 receptions for 245 yards including four touchdowns.
Wiley excelled in his final season before entering the NFL Draft. In 2023, he started in 12 games accumulating 520 yards and eight touchdowns.
Prospects/predictions
It is understandable for fans to get carried away with Travis Kelce acting as a mentor for the rookie.
Wiley has much to learn but like Kelce he excels downfield rather than being a blocker.
However, the Texas native must work on this side of his game to be ready to replace Kelce upon retirement.
Overall, Wiley has the raw skills to be molded into an explosive weapon for the Chiefs offense which Patrick Mahomes could utilize.
