The coincidence between the Chiefs’ game schedule and Taylor Swift’s tour dates in 2024

In 2023, the Kansas City Chiefs had more than just a triumphant season on the field; they were also graced with the presence of none other than Taylor Swift, the pop sensation and girlfriend of star player Travis Kelce.

Swift’s attendance at several games wasn’t just a matter of supporting her partner, it was a non-strategic move that attracted a wave of new fans to the NFL, especially among the younger, female public.

Her affectionate support for her “Guy on the Chiefs” added a layer of glamour and excitement to the games, making them even more appealing to a wider audience.

When the Kansas City schedule was released, conspiracy theories began to emerge, speculating about the influence of Swift’s presence on the league’s choice of matchups for the Chiefs.

The coincidence between the Chiefs’ calendar and Taylor Swift’s concerts

During the regular season in October, three NFL stadiums will host the last nine shows of The Eras Tour in the US. The teams affected will be the Miami Dolphins, the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts, who will play their games in their opponents’ stadiums.

However, on 17 November, KC faces the Buffalo Bills away from home. As it happens, the singer will be 111 miles away from them and won’t be performing on this particular day – she’ll be on the Canadian leg of the tour (from 14 to 23 November at Toronto’s Rogers Centre).

On the Chiefs’ only game day in the window between 14th and 23rd November, the NFL decided to put on a road game for the team, curiously 111 miles from Taylor Swift.

But the NFL’s VP of broadcast planning said it wasn’t on purpose.

KC’s schedule wasn’t made thinking about the singer’s presence

The NFL took into account the box office success of Swift’s Eras Tour when creating the 2024 calendar, but didn’t intentionally make it easy for Swift to go and watch her boyfriend.

Mike North, vice president of broadcast planning, has broken the silence on the organisation of the teams’ calendars for 2024 has anything to do with Swift’s concerts.

“We certainly considered the tour dates that hit NFL stadiums,” explained the VP. “I think she’s in Miami, maybe New Orleans, Indy. We certainly considered those.”

He spoke about whether or not it was deliberate to set the Chiefs up to face the Bills on 17 November.

“I saw a lot of conspiracy theorists talking about Kansas City at Buffalo in the middle of the season, right when Taylor’s playing Toronto,” said. “That one definitely did not hit our radar screen.”

Roger Goodell had already said that he is happy with the new wave of fans that Taylor is bringing to the NFL: “It’s great to have her a part of it. Obviously it creates a buzz, it creates another group of young fans, particularly young women that are interested in seeing, ‘Why is she going to this game?’ ‘Why is she interested in this game besides Travis?’ She’s a football fan. And I think that’s great for us.”

Swift’s involvement with the Chiefs signifies a shift towards a more inclusive and diversified environment within the NFL.

By embracing her presence and leveraging her immense popularity, the league is tapping into new markets and demographics, ultimately expanding its brand and broadening its fan base.
