With the Chiefs’ victory over Minnesota last week, Patrick Mahomes has now beaten all 32 NFL teams at least once, but if there is one team that he enjoys playing more than anyone, it could very well be their Thursday Night Football opponents, the Denver Broncos.
The reigning NFL MVP is 11-0 in his career against Denver, throwing for 300+ yards and three scores in their two victories against them last season.
Before their first game against the Broncos in 2022, Patrick Mahomes averaged career numbers of 253 passing yards per game versus Denver, with 1.3 touchdowns and 0.4 interceptions in his career.
Meanwhile, he’s been sacked one or less times in three of his last four outings against the club from the Mile-High City.

Breaking through
Before the Chiefs and Broncos squared off on December 11, 2022, Mahomes had never beaten Russell Wilson as KC came up short in 2018, losing to Wilson’s former team, the Seattle Seahawks, on that occasion (38-31).
It seems as though Mahomes was on a mission to change that last year, outduelling Wilson in both of their 2022 meetings, throwing 100 yards more than him in both victories and tossing two more combined touchdown passes (6-4).
Both QBs who look destined for the Hall of Fame will be seeing a lot more of each other in the future as well, with Mahomes committing to KC until 2031 and Wilson locked up until 2028, so the Chiefs #27 has plenty of time to pile up more big numbers against Wilson and the Broncos.
If you look at the wins and losses of Mahomes versus Denver clearly, it’s not close, however, the final scoreline suggests otherwise.
Six of the 11 victories by Mahomes against the Broncos have been by a single score, including both encounters last season when KC won 34-28 and 27-24, respectively.
Thinnest of Margins
That’s worth noting as Mahomes aims for a dozen victories against their AFC West rivals on Thursday.
There’s been a lot of criticism surrounding the Chiefs’ passing game after five weeks in 2023, with many experts concerned about a lack of production through the air which might hurt their chances to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
Mahomes put up a combined 680 yards passing against the Denver secondary last year, over half of his current total after five regular-season outings this season (1,287).
This week, there is a real opportunity for the Chiefs to drastically improve their 2023 passing stats when they battle the Broncos at Arrowhead.
To put it kindly, the Broncos have been abysmal in pass coverage this year, allowing a league-high 450.6 yards per game.
You might point to their disastrous showing against Miami in Week Three when Denver allowed 376 yards through the air, but that secondary has given up multiple passing scores in all but one contest this season (31-21 loss to the New York Jets).
I’d expect the Chiefs to go to the air early and often on Thursday.
