The San Francisco 49ers could be entering a difficult and challenging situation in the coming weeks.
Having gone 1-1 this season, the runners-up started 2024 by beating the New York Jets, but without one of the pieces that makes their offense so good.
Christian McCaffrey sat out both games due to an Achilles tendonitis. He’s expected to be out for at least another three weeks.
However, San Francisco could count on a stellar performance from Jordan Mason on Monday Night Football against NY – the result was so good that I’d venture to say the fact that jersey 23 was out didn’t have much of an impact.
To make matters worse, in the matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, which in theory was supposed to be a guaranteed win, the 49ers were defeated.
In addition to losing the game, Deebo Samuel also suffered an injury that will have him unable to play for a few weeks.

Deebo Samuel’s injury
Matt Barrows, from The Athletic, was the one who broke the bad news. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a calf sprain and, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, will be out for a few weeks.
Despite the injury, the pass-catcher was one of the team’s best players in the Week 2 match-up, finishing with 110 air yards on eight receptions, both the best figures among the receivers who were on the field.
The California franchise also loses one of its main targets in the receiving corps, who often became an option in the running game as well.
Unfortunately, Samuel’s injury history is what makes him an incognito. When healthy, he’s an unstoppable machine.
So far, the receiver has racked up a squad-leading 13 receptions for 164 yards, as well as 10 carries for 13 yards and a rushing touchdown.
What to expect from the Niners going forward
Shanahan spoke to the media about the status of the franchise for the remainder of the regular season. You have to be optimistic that both Samuel and McCaffrey will be available from week 10 at least.
“When you lose real good players, it’s always tough. But it happens all over the league and it’s a huge part of this league and a huge part of this game. We’ve got to deal with it.”
Among the remaining (and healthy) running backs in SF, it’s likely that Jordan Mason will assume responsibility at this point, with rookies Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor Jr. filling the remaining needs.
As for the pass-catching class, it’s one that’s already familiar with the system: Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings should be the names to fill Samuel’s absence.
Don’t forget that George Kittle is also available as a receiver.
The HC talked about not thinking the team will experience major changes, but is grateful to be able to count on reliable backup WRs.
“I don’t think anything is a true necessity,” noted. “But having that room gives us a luxury to pick wherever we need it the most and we’ll see how we feel about that here over the next few days.”
Samuel was the subject of trade speculation during the offseason, but remained with the team that selected him in the 2019 Draft.
With San Francisco, the WR had his best season in 2021, recording 1,405 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Last season, he had 892 air yards, 225 earth yards and 12 total TDs.
