Rex Ryan explains theory why Cowboys lost to Bills, compares to his Jets team

Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan has suggested the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Bills as a hangover from their win over the Eagles.

Dallas were blown out by Buffalo on Sunday, losing 31-10, and late on it was 31-3.

It came just one week after the Cowboys beat divisional rivals the Philadelphia Eagles 33-13 and moved to the top of the division.

Now, while their loss saw them clinch a play-off berth regardless, Philadelphia have an easier schedule and are expected to now win the division.

Rex Ryan explains loss

Speaking to Get Up, former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said the Cowboys put too much emotionally into beating the Eagles, that it meant they had little energy to beat the Bills.

He compared this to when his Jets beat the Patriots in the play-offs in 2011, and then lost to the Steelers in the AFC Championship game.

Ryan said: “They accomplished that great game [against the Eagles], they beat their division rival. Man I knew it, it reminded me so much of when we did the same thing in the play-offs in New England. We had put so much target on them, ‘we are going to go back and kick their butts and that kind of stuff’.

“The next week we are playing in the AFC championship game and we come out flat. How the hell is that possible? We had a great week of preparation and practice, everything else, it’s so similar to me.”

From a mental standpoint, the Eagles game may have been a mini-Super Bowl for the Cowboys. Having to face a Buffalo side fighting for their place in the play-offs was not an easy game to follow with.

But this is what happens in the NFL, you have to be great each week, or you will beat, and at worst, embarrassed like the Cowboys on Sunday.

It is better to get a loss like this out of the way early, when there is still time to bounce back. It is a warning – if the Cowboys play like this in the play-offs, they will be out, and there will be no coming back.

Ryan’s Jets never got as far as they did in 2011. That was their peak.
