Patrick Mahomes would do something he’s never done before if Chiefs lose to Patriots this weekend

The lingering cloud over the Kansas City Chiefs offensive struggles could get a break this weekend.

Matt Nagy‘s group are seventh in the NFL regarding yards-per-game (361.3), scoring just 22.5 points a contest, nearly a converted touchdown fewer than a season ago (29.2).

For most NFL teams, a two-game losing streak is no reason to panic but considering how poorly the Chiefs are executing offensively, it should be concerning.

In the Patrick Mahomes’ era as their starting quarterback, the Chiefs have never lost three consecutive games. Don’t bet it on it happening now.

Andy Reid hasn’t seen his team lose more than two straight contests since 2017 when KC dropped four in a row from early November until the beginning of December.

While the offense is probably going through as difficult a time as we’ve ever seen under Mahomes, there shouldn’t be as much pressure on them this weekend.

Less is More

Years ago, travelling to Foxborough to face the New England Patriots, in those blistery conditions, against the G.O.A.T. Tom Brady was something every team wanted to avoid.

Facing the 2023 version of Bill Belichick’s Pats, though, may be exactly what a slumbering offense like the Chiefs could use.

It isn’t as if New England’s defense is all that bad; in fact, quite the contrary, as they rank in the top 10 for yards allowed per game.

Belichick’s group are particularly sharp against the run, one of only three NFL teams this year that’ve conceded fewer than 90 yards on the ground per game (88.2), with the others being San Francisco (78.3) and Chicago (83.7).

Mahomes is used to going mono-e-mono with the top offenses in the NFL, while needing to find the end zone multiple times in seasons past.

Against the 2023 Patriots, though, there shouldn’t be as much pressure on them to score.

The Pats’ offense is 28th regarding yards-per-game (291.4), averaging 13 points per contest, the fewest in the NFL.

This season, New England has given up 10 points or fewer on four occasions, while boasting a record of 1-3 when doing so.

That should relieve some pressure off a Kansas City offensive unit that has scored 20 points or fewer on seven occasions in 2023, while putting up double-digits for points in each contest this season.

KC’s defense has allowed the second-fewest points per game this year (17.5), behind the Baltimore Ravens (16.8).

Foxborough Woes

Sunday will be the Chiefs’ first visit to Greater Boston since 2019, with KC winning two of their previous three games at Gillette Stadium.

In his last regular season visit to Foxborough, Mahomes was underwhelming, with a touchdown pass and a pick.

Still, the defense held Brady to a 63.3 passer rating with an interception, enabling the Chiefs to triumph 23-16.

When these teams met in the 2018 AFC Championship Game, Mahomes was much better with three TD throws and a 117.0 passer rating, though the Chiefs lost in overtime, 37-31.

Since 1998 however, KC have only triumphed twice at Foxborough in the regular-season and playoffs.

Mahomes had another strong showing in his first meeting at Gillette Stadium, tossing four touchdowns for a 110.0 rating, with KC suffering a 43-40 defeat.
