Patrick Mahomes, the NFL’s best quarterback, was also crowned athlete of the year in 2024.
Last Thursday was the ESPY event. This is an award ceremony currently presented by the American television network ABC to recognise and reward individual athletic performance and team performance.
Mahomes took home two more trophies. He won the “Best NFL Player” Award and the “Best Male Athlete” Award.
The QB was unable to attend the event as he is enjoying the last few days of his holidays with his family in Europe before training camp begins.
Among Mahomes’ relatives were his mother, Randi, and his sister, Mia Randall.
The official responsible for receiving the award in place of the signal-caller was coach Andy Reid.

The award ceremony and Andy Reid’s tearful speech
In the Best Male Athlete category, Pat Mahomes was competing against emblematic sports figures: Shohei Ohtani, star of the Los Angeles Angels/Dodgers, Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers legend, and Scottie Scheffler, golf champion.
Kansas City’s HC took to the stage to receive the trophy and represent his quarterback.
And it couldn’t have been anyone else.
Reid gave his speech in a way that passed Mahomes’ thanks, but began by tracing a timeline of his history of victory and maturing with the player.
“I’ve been around this kid for a few years now, and to watch him grow as a teammate and leader has been phenomenal. But really, more than that, to watch him grow as a father and husband has probably been the best part of that. It’s a real tribute to him.” claimed.
“We’re very lucky to have him in Kansas City. All of us are in the National Football League, but really, in Kansas City, we appreciate all he does for the city in itself and, obviously, for the organization.”
What Pat Mahomes asked Reid to say on his behalf
Reid then said thank you on Pat’s place and showed how much the QB would like it to be said that the award is collective.
“On behalf of Patrick, he knows this is a team award; he would want me to make sure that I say he is all about the team. I’ve heard people get up here, some great coaches get up here and talk and do a phenomenal job, and players, likewise athletes. But this kid comes in the huddle every day, every practice, and says, Let’s be great.”
He ended his statement with a funny comment and by saying a big thanks to the Chiefs fans for all their support.
“It doesn’t come out like it’s corny, right? The guys respect and understand it, and that’s how he goes about his business on and off the field. My hat goes off to him for that. And again, on behalf of Patrick, thank you to the ESPYs and all our great fans and Chiefs Nation there; we appreciate all they do in supporting us, so thank you.”
Mahomes, even though he was absent, made a point of being present, albeit on social media. He made a tweet expressing his gratitude for being named the best athlete of the year.
“Incredible athletes across the board in this category. Blessed and honored to bring home this award again. thanks to the fans and @ESPYS. Big dawg Andy crushed too,” he wrote.
