Patrick Mahomes has explained how he was fired up to win this season amid the team’s offensive struggles.

Superbowl winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been reflecting on how the team managed to win a second successive title.

Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs raised their game in the playoffs after a difficult regular season plagued with drops from receivers.

The two-time MVP insists he was always bullish the team would improve, and there was a very particular reason why. He did not want to waste a Super Bowl calibre defense.

Patrick Mahomes knew the defense was special

Defensive co-ordinator Steve Spagnuolo‘s unit was arguably an even bigger factor than Patrick Mahomes behind the Kansas City Chiefs winning the Super Bowl this past season.

Mahomes knew how good the defense was, and he wanted to take full advantage.

Speaking to The Peter King podcast, Mahomes reflected on how he felt midway through the regular season.

He explained: “We were struggling. Our defense was a championship defence and I didn’t want to squander that.

“I knew if we could just get just a little bit more from each and every person that we were able to score enough to win at the highest level, and I’d seen a difference in how they were developing..

“Those defenses get better as the year goes on. So I knew that we’re going to be in the playoffs and being in every game.

“I think the biggest thing for us was [to] just continue to work hard to continue the process.”

Spagnuolo was very complimentary about Mahomes in a recent interview, saying he believes he could do anything he sets his mind to.

Mahomes believes in his teammates

Mahomes meanwhile has full faith in his his teammates, and backed them to eventually click into gear and compete at the business end of the season, even if he recognised it was not at all easy.

He explained: “I believe in everybody in that locker room, I mean, every single year, I know it’s a challenge.

“I know you have to continue to build and kind of restart. But whenever you go through the training camps that we go through, you go through the practices that we go through, how hard everybody works, there’s no other choice than to win, I mean no other choice and you go out there and put on the line and give everything you have and a lot of time that means we’re winning.”

Mahomes comments speak to his determination and his football intelligence, recognising what a special defensive unit, and his desire to take full advantage of it.

It all clicked into gear in overtime of the Super Bowl, with the Chiefs defense making an important stop, before Mahomes led the lead up the field for a memorable touchdown drive.
