Mahomes’ connection to basketball

Experience is something Mahomes definitely has. In high school, he played American football, basketball and baseball. And he was pretty good at all three.

A few weeks ago, a video went viral on social media of the quarterback hitting baskets when he was much younger.

Mahomes even qualified to be eligible for the MLB Draft in 2014. He was actually selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round, but never signed a contract.

He had other dreams…. the oval ball. The details of the rest of this story don’t even need to be told.

Mahomes’ connection with an NBA player

As a native of Texas, it’s normal for the quarterback to have grown up being influenced by the teams in his hometown.

In an exclusive interview with First Things First on Thursday, the defending champion talked about his short history with basketball.

“If I continued to try and play from eighth grade… I played point guard, I could shoot, I could pass,” he said. “I thought that was going to be my dream, but once I stopped growing I knew I had to choose between baseball and football.”

He even compared his style of play at the time with his favourite player as he was growing up. The signal-caller said he “used to shoot mid-ranges”, but that his game is much more like his favorite player today, Luka Doncic.

Mahomes was asked if he believes he could play in the NBA today: “I don’t think I could play now.”

Imagine if the Chiefs legend hadn’t chosen the NFL… who could he be in the NBA? Or in the MLB?
