Patrick Mahomes NFL Combine, how the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback scored

Add as preferred source on Google

Whether Patrick Mahomes is throwing 60-yard dimes down the field or turning a seemingly nailed on sack into a 30-yard gain with his feet, it seems like his talent is endless.

The variety of skills he possesses and having developed into a dual-threat quarterback is testament to the star’s athleticism.

Hybrid Quarterbacks

Playing as a conventional quarterback seems to be a dying art in the modern era of NFL. Many franchises have actively drafted and moulded their signal callers to be just as threatening with their feet as their hands, if not more.

As a draft prospect out of Texas Tech in 2017, in the class of quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes was not labelled as a player with high stock.

In all fairness, the hybrid quarterback did not post numbers to make many scouts or coaches alike turn their heads or lick their lips.

So just how did the face of the NFL in 2024 score in his combine?

2017 Combine quarterback prospects

According to reports, the quarterbacks who were given the highest potential were: Deshaun Watson (Cleveland Browns), Mitchell Trubisky (free agent) and DeShone Kizer (retired).

So, let’s compare how Patrick Mahomes scored with his combine counterparts.

Trubisky earned the highest overall grade in the combine as he scored an excellent 7.0, which earned him the slot of second overall pick by the Chicago Bears. Watson was a highly valued asset scoring second highest with a grade of 6.8. Both Mahomes and Kizer were deemed worthy of only scoring a 6.3.

Despite now being the most productive quarterback with his feet, Mahomes was the slowest in comparison. Managing to set a time of 4.8 seconds in his 40-yard dash, comfortably bettered by Trubisky (4.67) and Watson (4.66).

However, Mahomes excelled in his production scoring for Next Gen Stats in the combine, earning the highest score of all quarterbacks with 89. Watson would have the second highest with 88 and Trubisky would complete the top three with an 84.

While it is one of his key strengths today, the three-time Super Bowl MVP did not score strongly in athleticism. Next Gen Stats algorithm ranked the first pick for the Chiefs seventh for overall athleticism. He was beaten by Watson who was placed in second and Trubisky in fourth.

Where the 2017 quarterback class find themselves today

Now in 2024, Mahomes is running out of space in his trophy cabinet and his athleticism mixed with his ability to navigate the pocket is what has shaped him into the superstar he is today. Whilst Trubisky has succumbed to free agency after a disappointing stint with Pittsburgh Steelers and Watson battles to stay healthy consistently at the Cleveland Browns. Paxton Lynch was last seen in the XFL.

Neither Trubisky nor Watson have come close to a Super Bowl appearance and Kizer decided to transition into the NFT business at 25.
