‘None of it matters’… Bill Belichick speculation mean Dallas Cowboys 2024 season balances on one thing

The Dallas Cowboys head coach is in hot water and the situation has got harder with one coach being heavily linked to the job.

ESPN reported last week that the Cowboys are in a prime position to land Belichick if they want.

An anonymous close friend of the eight-time Super Bowl winner stated that Belichick would only be a head coach under Jerry Jones.

The 72-year-old is unemployed in 2024 but has already pondered his next move.

Mike McCarthy under pressure as Belichick wants the Cowboys’ job

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is under scrutiny after a disastrous 2023 postseason.

Since taking charge in Dallas, his overall playoff record has been underwhelming (1-3 W/L).

Moreover, just one postseason win in four years has left a sour taste in owner Jerry Jones’ mouth.

McCarthy even failed to qualify for the playoffs during his first season which does not support his case.

As of 2024, the Super Bowl XLV champion head coach has just one year outstanding on his Cowboys deal.

Mike Zimmer is only on a one-year deal as a rebuild looms in 2025

Furthermore, newly appointed defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has only been given a one-year contract.

Therefore, Jones has lost patience and is giving the current coaching staff one season to deliver.

A clear message is being sent to the sideline and it is not a surprise with the Cowboys failure to make an NFC Championship game for nearly three decades.

McCarthy’s regular season is dubbed ‘irrelevant’ in Jerry Jones’ mind

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff is now convinced McCarthy’s 2024 regular season is ‘irrelevant’.

On his podcast, Middlekauff said: “The problem is, McCarthy [and] the regular season means nothing now! It’s irrelevant.

“Whether he wins 10,11,12 games, none of it matters. He’s [McCarthy’s] gonna be strictly judged in January. To me, he borderline has to get into an NFC Championship game. I just can’t imagine he will be the coach next year.”

The expectations have been set for McCarthy heading into the final year of his contract.

He must at least get America’s Team to the promised land of an NFC Championship appearance.

Belichicks’ presence raises McCarthy’s need to return the Cowboys to the glory days

Ultimately, McCarthy could notch up 14/15 wins in the regular season and it still would not be relevant in Jerry Jones’ mind if they underachieved in the postseason.

Belichick is now waiting in the wings for a job next year and the Cowboys are the top priority.

Per Mike Florio, depending on the performances, a deal could be agreed with Belichick before the conclusion of the season.

All eyes are on the Dallas Cowboys and the coaching departments’ fates are now on the line in 2024.
