Michael Irvin has given his seal of approval to the Dallas Cowboys hiring Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator.

Mike Zimmer has returned to the Dallas Cowboys as defensive coordinator, taking up his first role since a stint as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

Michael Irvin was a player while Zimmer was a defensive backs coach in Dallas, and he has seen the intensity he brings in his coaching sessions.

Using his own first-hand experience, the ‘Playmaker’ told Undisputed he is thrilled with Dallas’ decision to bring him in on Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff.

Mike McCarthy praises Mike Zimmer hire

There were multiple candidates for the defensive coaching role, with Rex Ryan among them. But Mike Zimmer was an outstanding candidate, and owner Jerry Jones was won over.

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin explained: “It’s a great hire. Knowing Zim and how he runs defenses, its not even a question there

“But knowing Zim’s personality and intensity which he brings to practise is why I think it’s a great hire.”

Irvin went on to elaborate, “I loved Zim as a defensive backs coach. Him and Deion [Sanders] were over there and we had the best practises. One on one was all out and it was heated, intense, every day.

“This is what they need in practice. When I heard our head coach stand up at a podium and say they were not prepared, that gutted me, that won’t happen with Zim. He will do everything to get them going.”

The Dallas Cowboys have a number of defensive stars, and Irvin believes Zimmer will make them better – but they must be prepared to be challenged every single day.

He said: “I know he will work well with Trevon Diggs. I know he knows what to do with Micah Parsons.

“He will call those guys out like he would with anybody. I think they’ve been missing that for quite a while.”
