Micah Parsons sets unprecedented Cowboys record while closing in on another

One of the top pass rushers in the NFL continues to rewrite the Dallas Cowboys record books.

Entering Week 11, linebacker Micah Parsons had 53 quarterback pressures, the second-most in the league.

In their dominating victory over the New York Giants in Week 10 (49-17), Parsons did not register a sack or tackle, the first time he’d failed to do so all year.

Last Sunday, though, the Cowboys superstar had 2.5 sacks on the 2023 first-overall pick Bryce Young, helping Dallas to a 33-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

That equals a career-high for Parsons regarding sacks in an NFL game, which he set originally during his rookie campaign in 2021.

He’s now seventh in the NFL this season in quarterback sacks with 10.

As a result Parsons is now the first player in Cowboys’ history to register double-digit sacks in each of his first three NFL seasons.

Parsons is just getting started

With seven regular season games remaining, the odds of Parsons setting a new personal best regarding sacks is looking good.

In 2021, he came up with 13 sacks, besting that total by a half-sack more a year ago.

While the Giants kept him at bay two weeks ago, Parsons showed in Carolina that he hasn’t cooled off.

Closing in on another Cowboys record

After 10 games in 2023, Parsons is averaging one sack per contest.

If he can increase that average just a bit or have a few monster sack games down the stretch of the regular season, the Penn State product could etch his name further into Cowboys history.

The Cowboys single-season record for sacks is 20, jointly held by Harvey Martin (1977) and DeMarcus Ware (2008).

To this point of the regular season, Parsons has put up more than one sack in three encounters and has only been shut out in that category three times.

Over his NFL career, Parsons hasn’t registered more than 2.5 sacks over 60 minutes of action, having done so twice before.

However, he has picked up two or more sacks in 11 encounters during his professional career.

That means he must average approximately 1.5 sacks down the stretch of this season to equal that Cowboys record.

If Parsons is to have a multiple-sack game, their upcoming Thanksgiving Day affair with the Washington Commanders could be an excellent opportunity to inch closer to that record.

The Commanders have given up the second-most sacks in the NFL (51), allowing three or more in all but one game this year while conceding six on two occasions.

Dallas will play Washington twice in between now and the end of the season, so Parsons might be closer to that record than we think.
