The Dallas Cowboys are starting to find their feet during the offseason after a slow start to the proceedings.

Before the opening of free agency, it was all but confirmed that the Cowboys would be moving on from Tyron Smith.

The offensive tackle would be saying goodbye to Cowboys Nation after 13 seasons.

Smith is one of the best linemen in the NFL but recent injuries have hindered his productivity.

Tyron Smith departs

The Cowboys’ first-round pick in 2011 has produced an illustrious career: eight Pro Bowl appearances, two First-Team All-Pro selections, and an induction into the NFL 2010’s All-Decade Team.

However, he has now welcomed his first taste of free agency and has already been snatched up.

New York Giants v Dallas Cowboys

The New York Jets have pinned the veteran to a one-year deal worth up to $20 million.

He will be protecting Aaron Rodgers in the Big Apple as he progresses through the back end of his career.

The 33-year-old has been part of the Cowboys furniture for 13 years and now departs Dallas.

Moreover, he endured severe injuries which had him sidelined for most of the season in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

Why Tyron Smith has left

Traditionally, Smith has always been an offensive guard but moved to tackle after the emergence of Tyler Smith.

Jerry Jones has sanctioned the decision to move on from Smith due to his cost, age, and injury record.

The most cost-effective decision would be to build around a younger and cheaper player.

Many players have come out and wished the lineman all the best on social media.

One of the latest stars to do so is Micah Parsons.

He commented the following on the NFL’s official post confirming the deal with the Jets: “Legend!!! Will be missed!! I can’t explain how much better I got from Tyron.”

The former Defensive Rookie of the Year was full of compliments for the tackle and explained that his game has vastly improved because of him.

Evidently, Smith was a role model behind the scenes for the younger players and dedicated time to improving their game.

A big personality and figure has been lost on and off the field for the Cowboys.

It will be interesting to see if Smith continues to play his newly adopted tackle role or if he switches back to his guard one in New York.
