Marcus Spears says Dallas Cowboys has ‘worst roster’ in years, Stephen A Smith reacts

Every year, Dallas’ season-long action script always seems to be the exact same.

This offseason, the Dallas Cowboys have seen more people leave than new players joining the team.

The franchise has yet to fill the vacancies of the free-agents who left. The departures of defensive end Dorance Armstrong, left tackle Tyron Smith, centre Tyler Biadasz and running back Tony Pollard left the squad weakened. It’s worth remembering that Dallas still has $7.4 million on the salary cap.

Linebacker Erick Kendricks and cornerback Jourdan Lewis were the Cowboys’ only free-agency additions so far.

Now that the OTAs have started, America’s Team is witnessing two of its key players not showing up. Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb are skipping this first training phase and hope to sign new long-term deals as soon as possible.

The organisation’s vice-president, Stephen Jones, made it clear that the Cowboys are aware of everything that is going on and that they have a plan. He talked about it with 105.3 The Fan in Dallas: “We spend max, max money year in and year out. All 32 can only spend the same amount of money over a five-year stretch,” said Jones.

“When we’re all said and done, we max out our salary cap every year. We will have done that and what comes with having a good roster, which we do, we also are looking towards signing our own guys. It doesn’t mean it happens overnight. But when you’re wanting to sign players like Dak [Prescott] and Micah (Parsons) and CeeDee (Lamb), then certainly you have to hold money back if you want to have a realistic chance of signing those guys.”

Former Cowboys player frustrated by team’s lack of effectiveness

Former Dallas player and current ESPN analyst Marcus “Swagu” Spears in the latest edition of NFL First Take on ESPN, said that the team’s trio (Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons) is not enough if they want to reach better places.

“We’ve known for two and half years now that you’re gonna have to resign Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb, but only having them and Dak is not gonna win you a damn Super Bowl. And that is what we are talking about in context, and the problem is because it makes sense to have to sign both of those guys. They’re gonna command a lot of money when they’re up for their contracts. Everybody knows that, but the bottom line is ‘everybody that’s winning a Super Bowl figure out a way to do it’.

“So as much as we focus on the Cowboys and we get mad about them standing pat, you should be pissed off more as a Dallas Cowboys fan, the fact that other people can figure out and manage ways to do this and get the championships or NFC Championships with signing their own players and also bringing in free agents.

“I’ve been singing this song for three years now. Has the roster been good? Yes, it’s been solid. This may be the worst one since we’ve been talking about Dallas having a chance to win a damn Super Bowl. Everybody else can do it. And it seems when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys, it’s always something we’re trying to get people in that’s gonna take you over the hump.”

Stephen A. Smith isn’t surprised by what he’s seeing from the Cowboys

Journalist Stephen A. Smith agreed with Spears’ opinion, but believes that the key issue has been the same for years: “You’re still missing the point. What the issue is it’s not what they doing, that is bad enough, which is close to nothing, it’s that they’ll sit up there and tell you ‘we’re gonna do what we’ve been doing’. That’s the part of the job, to encapsulate everything you’re talking about.

“You’re overpaying Dak, you’ve been overpaying Dak – you understand what I’m saying? I mean, we gotta sign these dudes. You better have to sign some dudes. You lost some other dudes in free-agency, you’ve been losing some dudes in free agency”, he added, laughing.

“Listen, we watched Saquon Barkley go to Philadelphia. We watched that defensive coordinator go take the head up the job in the nation’s capital, right? You’ve been watching people depart. It’s the same old, same old and these brothers, Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones, these dudes will go in front of the cameras and the microphone and go like this: ‘We’ve been doing it. We’re always all-in. So what you’re saying is: Cowboy fans everywhere expect more of the same.”

It remains to be seen what moves Dallas will make in the Draft. It’s expected that they’ll opt to select an offensive tackle in the first round, but there are rumours that a quarterback could come in, since Dak Prescott’s situation is shaky.
