From the moment he stepped onto the field for an NFL game, it’s clear that Patrick Mahomes was destined for greatness.

In his sixth season as a starting quarterback, the KC pivot has already rewritten countless NFL and Chiefs’ records.

On Sunday, in their victory against the Los Angeles Chargers (31-17), Mahomes and the offense were as sharp as we’ve seen all season, with the reigning league MVP making some more history in that game.

Milestones

In their victory over the Chargers, Mahomes threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns with just one interception.

He became the fastest NFL QB to throw for at least 400 yards in 10 games in league history, doing so in the 87th game of his career.

That’s three quicker than Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, who three for 400 yards on 13 occasions during his illustrious NFL career.

Mahomes has joined the likes of Marino, Matthew Stafford, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady as the only QBs to throw for at least 400 yards in 10 or more games.

With their victory on Sunday, Mahomes threw for 400+ yards and four touchdown passes in a game for the fifth time in his NFL career, putting him in a tie with Brees for the third-most in league history.

Only Marino (seven) and Peyton Manning (eight) have had more than 400-4 games in the NFL.

After the opening half on Sunday, it looked as though Mahomes was on his way to making some more history, throwing for 321 yards in the opening two quarters against the Chargers.

That had Mahomes on pace to break the league record for most passing yards in a single game set by Norm Van Brocklin in 1951 (554).

Mahomes’ splendid performance against LA has significantly boosted this offense, who are currently averaging 396.7 yards per game, second only to the Miami Dolphins (462.3).

The Chiefs are now second in the NFL regarding passing yards averaging 285.4 per game, a category which Miami once again leads (300.0), while KC now has 15 touchdowns through the air in 2023.

You would think, given the next Chiefs opponent, Mahomes and company will be able to pad some of their offensive stats even more this weekend.

Not only have the Chiefs had their way with the Denver Broncos, defeating them 16 straight times, but Sean Payton’s defense has been anything but stellar in 2023, conceding a league-high 424.7 yards per game, including 257.4 passing yards per game.

Offensively, after seven games this season, Kansas City are now averaging 25.4 points per game, scoring a total of 178 points.

While Travis Kelce is still getting more of the targets among the Chiefs pass catchers, it’s important to note that Mahomes has utilized all of his weapons through the air this season, as eight or more players have at least one catch in each of their games so far.

For as much criticism as the offense has been getting to this stage of the season, there seem to be many more positive signs than negative ones as we advance.
