Kevin Clark dismisses bold claim in Patrick Mahomes v Tom Brady debate

The Kansas City Chiefs’ mission to achieve a three-peat for the first time in NFL history has been accepted.

That’s three Super Bowl titles in five years.

Achieving a third ring in a row would imply several other things, including the sacrament of the Chiefs’ dynasty and a step up for Patrick Mahomes.

The debate over whether Mahomes is already above Tom Brady has become increasingly heated.

One more title for the defending champion could potentially change that.

The franchises that almost made it

In NFL history, there have been several teams that had the opportunity to “three-peat,” which means winning three consecutive championships. Here are the teams that achieved this feat:

Green Bay Packers (1965-1967):

Miami Dolphins (1971-1973):

Pittsburgh Steelers (1974-1976):

Analysts differ on whether Mahomes will become the Goat if he wins the three-peat

In terms of statistics, titles and awards won, Tom Brady outstrips Patrick Mahomes.

The argument of those who place Brady as the Goat is that Mahomes hasn’t won the same number of titles and that it’s not yet known whether he’ll achieve the same longevity as TB12.

On the other side, those who defend the idea that Mahomes is or will become the Goat if he secures the three-peat are thinking that he will achieve a feat never done before in the entire history of the NFL.

During a recent edition of ESPN’s Get Up show, the panel debated Mahomes vs Brady.

Chris Canty, an analyst and former NFL defensive end, said with conviction that if KC takes home the three-peat, Mahomes will become the Goat.

“I mean, if he wins three championships in a row in the NFL, in a league that is designed more so than any of these other sports leagues to have parity… If he wins three in a row, given all of the different iterations of the Kansas City Chiefs that we’ve seen, then he’s the damn goat.”

In contrast, Kevin Clark said that this discussion will continue for a long time: “Talk to me in 2038 which will be the year that Mahomes is 43 years old, which is the year that Tom Brady won his most recent and last presumably Super Bowl.”

“The way that Tom Brady’s career unfolded was a football miracle and a football success story that I think we’ve never seen in sports. The way he reinvented certain positions of field, reinvented offense, redeemed himself in 2007 and essentially reinvented the way we think about offense in the NFL. Mahomes career has a lot of twists and turns to go and yes, there were more rings to catch Brady,” said.

He then concluded: “I just think he has started the goat debate. We didn’t think was possible, but I don’t think he can be the goat this time next year. That’s impossible.”
