Jerry Jones immediate reaction to Dallas Cowboys loss, says what every fan is thinking

The Dallas Cowboys exit from the NFL postseason left everybody flabbergasted, particularly their owner.

Perhaps still reeling from his team’s 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Jerry Jones was at a loss for words after the game.

“I’m floored,” Jones said to Jon Machota of The Athletic.

“This was one of my most surprises since I’ve been involved in sports,” adds Jones.”

“This seems like the most painful (playoff loss) because we all had such great expectation and we had hope for this team.”

That’s a powerful statement coming from an owner who’s seen the Cowboys lose nine times in the Divisional Round or later, including losing to San Francisco in the 1994 NFC Championship Game (38-28).

Sunday was Dallas’ first home defeat since September 2022 (19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers).

Jordan Love dismantled the Cowboys’ secondary with three touchdown passes and a rating of 157.2.

Aaron Jones, meanwhile, was a handful on the ground, racking up 118 yards on 21 carries for three scores.

The Cowboys were sloppy in all facets of the game, with few standouts.

Dak Prescott threw two interceptions, CeeDee Lamb caught just two passes in the opening half, and Micah Parsons failed to hurry Love all game long.

Blindsided

Anyone watching the Cowboys game on Sunday could not expect to see them look so poor.

Dallas won 12 games in the regular season for a third successive campaign but has captured just one playoff affair since 2019.

Neither Dak, CeeDee or Parsons were at their best though they weren’t the only ones.

DaRon Bland got beaten numerous times, DeMarcus Lawrence didn’t register a sack, and Stephon Gilmore was below average.

“I don’t think anyone saw this coming. We didn’t get it done in any of the phases,” said Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy.

“I think the biggest thing is we’re disappointed,” he added. “… I haven’t thought past the outcome of this game.”

After such a dismal showing, McCarthy could experience further disappointment this offseason, with his job status now very much in jeopardy.

“Nothing Set”

It didn’t take long for reporters to ask the question many will wonder throughout the Cowboys’ offseason: Will McCarthy be the coach in 2024?

“There’s nothing set on that,” says Jones.

“What I had planned to do was be with him tomorrow, going over how we played today and getting ready for the coming week. That’s what was on the agenda. Tomorrow, my agenda will be to dismiss the team.”

In his tenure as Cowboys head coach, McCarthy is 42-25 in the regular season but just 1-3 come playoff time.

He still has one year left on his contract, but after what transpired Sunday, all bets are off.

There are also plenty of big names seeking head coaching employment that the Cowboys may want to consider.

Bill Belichick is the biggest name available, though other coaches, like Mike Vrabel, Ron Rivera, and Pete Carroll, have strong resumes too.

Everything McCarthy’s built up in Dallas means nothing right now, and anything is possible after a loss like that.
