James Jones names the NFL quarterback Dak Prescott must demand to be paid more than

There are still no clear signs that the ongoing saga over the potential long-term extension of Dak Prescott is close to being settled.

The Dallas Cowboys have re-adjusted Dak Prescott’s contract and managed to free up $4 million in salary cap space.

His cap hit in 2025 will be $40 million. If he becomes a free agent next year, since his current contract expires at the end of this season, that amount will be a big problem for the franchise, which will still have to pay him even if they don’t have him on the roster.

In his last deal, Dak Prescott negotiated that he can’t be traded unless he wants to and that the team can’t put him on the franchise tag, so indeed Dallas could be in trouble if they don’t extend him.

Dak Prescott compared to Kirk Cousins

On Tuesday’s edition of the Speak show, former NFL wide receiver James Jones made a point of bringing to the table quarterbacks from other teams who have recently signed big contracts and said that the Dallas signal-caller does deserve an extension.

“Dak Prescott is going out there with this All Pro stuff, so ‘I need to be paid at an All Pro level, I need to be paid more than Kirk Cousins’.”

“We’re sitting here paying Baker Mayfield, & Kirk Cousins, and all of these other dudes and we’re talking about not paying Dak Prescott? That’s crazy to me!”

Prescott had the best season of his career in 2023. A passer rating of 105.9 with 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.

In nine years in the NFL, the QB was healthy in seven seasons and made the playoffs in five of them.

Dave Helman also joined the discussion about the player and raised a useful question.

“It’s not so much how good is Dak Prescott. For me it’s really ‘what are the choices that Dak Prescott have?'”

At this point in the off-season, the team that has declared to go ‘All-in’ in 2024 has no other name on their plate than Prescott.

What Dallas still has to worry about

As well as giving a new contract to their franchise QB, the Cowboys still have a lot of money to invest in Micah Parsons and Cee Dee Lamb, crucial pieces of the team that should be re-signed in the coming weeks.

Now that the NFL Draft is upon us, owner and GM Jerry Jones needs to focus on good prospects to add to the America’s Team who can help Prescott out.
