Gronkowski calls for “more football” and less Taylor Swift during Chiefs telecasts

Over the past few years, the Kansas City Chiefs have been front and centre with their dazzling offensive performances.

In 2023, though, their stardom has reached another level that we have not seen in the NFL in quite some time.

The cause of that has been primarily the presence of Taylor Swift, who has regularly attended their games.

While celebrity sightings at sporting events is nothing unusual, there seems to be more focus in the stands at Chiefs games than we have previously seen.

Too Much Swift?

While it’s clear the NFL has taken advantage of the pop culture movement that is Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, some in the football circles are getting tired of all the attention.

On the podcast “New Heights” hosted by Travis and brother Jason, the Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman said he believes the league is “overdoing it” with all the Taylor Swift attention.

That is a view that Travis agreed on the show when Jason threw it out.

Their mother, Donna, had a different view earlier this month on Today.com, though believing it makes perfect sense for the NFL to capitalize on this marketing opportunity.

One person who knows a thing or do about NFL stardom and the tight end position recently weighed in on all of the attention Taylor Swift has gotten during Kansas City Chiefs telecasts.

Gronkowski speaks

Rob Gronkowski was a four-time All-Pro tight end, with five Pro Bowl selections, winning four Super Bowls alongside Tom Brady in New England (three) and Tampa Bay (one), and is widely considered one of the best tight ends in NFL history.

Gronk recently appeared on the “Up and Adams” show, where he was asked about all the attention around Swift at Chiefs games.

“I would just say, ‘Bye bye bye,’ it’s just a little bit too much,” Gronkowski responded. “Yes, show her, maybe have her perform a song now since they’re hyping her up every single week, but we want more football.”

The host of the show, Kay Adams, however, had a bit of a different view, wondering why there is so much objection to the attention placed on a pop culture icon who she believes is attracting new fans to the league.

Neither Adams nor her producer Matt Hamilton mentioned that Gronk may have gotten his song lyrics mixed up as “Bye Bye Bye” was a famous 90s tune by NSYNC when he likely meant to reference the Swift song “Bye Bye Baby”.

There are some polarizing views regarding all the shots of Swift in the stands, though legendary play-by-play voice Al Michaels seems to be the only one on the fence about the pop star saying they will cover her in “moderation”.

Regardless of where you stand on the Swift attention, it’s clear that none of this has hurt the Chiefs’ play on the field as they’re currently on a six-game winning streak.

Not that the networks do it on purpose, but perhaps more attention on Swift is a good thing for the Chiefs this year.

They’ve already got a target on their back being the reigning champions, and if there’s more attention centred around someone who doesn’t even play for them, one would think it allows the team more time to focus more on what they’re paid to do, win.
