Frank Clark returns to Seattle after Chiefs rumours

Frank Clark will be reuniting with a former team, but it won’t be the Kansas City Chiefs.

After the 30-year-old linebacker was released by the Denver Broncos shortly after their Thursday Night Football defeat in Kansas City, there was widespread speculation that he may return to the Super Bowl champions.

Instead, Clark has decided to return to another place he knows well, Seattle, who chose him in the second round at the 2015 NFL Draft.

Frank Clark next move

Earlier this month, Clark paid back $1.686 million to the Denver Broncos, paving the way for a potential exit from the Mile-High City.

He only featured in two games with Denver this season, registering two solo tackles.

Several teams had reportedly reached out to Clark after his release but the two-time Super Bowl champion in KC wanted to return to Seattle.

Clark played his first four NFL seasons with the Seahawks at the defensive end position, coming into a team that had made consecutive Super Bowl appearances before he was drafted.

In April 2019, Clark was traded to Kansas City for a third-round selection at the 2019 draft, signing a five-year $105.5 million contract with the Chiefs shortly afterwards.

During his time with the Chiefs, Clark was named to the Pro Bowl three times (2019-2021) with 23.5 sacks and making 127 tackles in his four years there.

To this stage of his NFL career, Clark has a total of 58.5 sacks and 14 forced fumbles in nine seasons.

After being released by Kansas City in March, Clark initially signed a one-year deal with the Broncos for $5.45 million.

To this point of the 2023 campaign, much of the Chiefs’ success has been due to its defense, which currently ranks seventh in the NFL regarding yards allowed per game (294.6) and is seventh in sacks (22).

The Seahawks have been pretty tough along the defensive line this season as well, tied with the Washington Commanders for the fifth-most sacks in the league so far (23).

Seattle has been desperate to find a reinforcement, though, to replace the injured Uchenna Nwosu, who is currently nursing a pec injury.

Nwosu was tied with Darrell Taylor for the team lead in sacks for Seattle last season (9.5).

In six games this season, Nwoso has registered 16 tackles, four for losses to go along with a pair of sacks.

Clark is expected to fill his void, having previously collected 35 sacks in 62 games with Seattle, including a career-high 13 in 2018.

Before anything is official, though, Clark must pass a physical and assuming that all goes well, he will be part of the Seahawks 53-man roster.

His strength and versatility are two things that Pere Carroll’s defense has been trying to address since Nwosu went down, and Clark should be able to take a lot of pressure off linebacker Bobby Wagner, who leads Seattle in tackles this season (63).

While Clark has posted some solid numbers during regular season play, he showed during his years with the Chiefs that he could also step up in clutch situations.

He’s racked up 13.5 playoff sacks in his career thus far, which is second all-time in NFL history, just 2.5 behind Willie McGinest.
