Exploring Sean McDermott’s record as head coach against Andy Reid

From his early days as an NFL head coach, Andy Reid has brought out the best in his players while also becoming a mentor to his assistants.

Many people who’ve worked under Andy Reid have gone on to have splendid head coaching careers.

The current Kansas City Chiefs head coach has had 11 former assistants become head coaches in the NFL.

Many of those names are still head coaches today and have achieved tremendous success.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson led the Eagles to their only Super Bowl title, Ron Rivera previously helped the Panthers win the NFC, and John Harbaugh won the Super Bowl with the Ravens.

While there are plenty of success stories in the Andy Reid coaching tree, rarely do you see those former assistants get the better of Reid.

Teacher vs Student

Over his lengthy head coaching career Reid’s faced his former assistants turned head coaches 26 times in the regular season and three times in the playoffs.

Reid has a 17-9 record in those regular-season affairs and is a perfect 3-0 in the postseason.

Of all his former assistants, only two have all-time winning records against Reid as head coaches.

Ironically, both will be teaming up to try and knock the Chiefs out of the playoffs this weekend.

Leslie Frazier won his only matchup against Reid’s Chiefs as Minnesota Vikings interim coach and will be the Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator until at least this weekend.

Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott knows Reid well, squaring off against the Chiefs’ legend seven times.

McDermott is 4-3 in those seven encounters, with the Bills winning 20-17 last December.

However, McDermott’s is 0-2 against Reid in the playoffs.

The Bills’ victory over the Chiefs earlier this season breathed new life into their campaign, with Buffalo unbeaten since that game.

Home and Away

Sunday’s game takes place at Orchard Park and will be the first time KC plays a road playoff fixture since the 2015 season.

In three road playoff games as Chiefs head coach, Reid is 1-2 with his only victory coming at the Houston Texans in the 2015 AFC Wild Card Round (30-0).

While sports betting odds may favour the Bills, history suggests Reid might have a slight edge over his former student on Sunday.

In his six previous visits to Buffalo as a head coach for both the Eagles and Chiefs, Reid is 4-2.

Interestingly, McDermott often gets the better of Reid in KC and vice versa for the Chiefs’ coach.

Since becoming the Bills’ head coach in 2017, McDermott has never lost a regular season game at Arrowhead.

Conversely, Reid’s never lost in Buffalo since becoming the Chiefs’ head coach, going 3-0.

When McDermott and Reid match wits on the sidelines, we’re usually in store for a nail-biter.

In their seven matchups against one another as head coaches, four were decided by a single score, including a thrilling 42-36 Chiefs triumph in the 2021 AFC Divisional Round.

Reid’s Chiefs have not beaten the Bills in regulation time since the 2020 AFC Championship Game (38-24).
