ESPN experts paint bleak picture for Dallas Cowboys, pick out key weaknesses

Each new statement from someone important within the Dallas organisation seems to make the picture more hopeless.

The impactful statement by Dallas Cowboys vice-president Stephen Jones reverberated intensely in sports media circles, dominating debates and discussions.

Jones emphasised that the strategy of going “all-in” doesn’t necessarily require big moves, highlighting the team’s plan to reinforce its current roster through contract extensions.

Recently, the Cowboys added running back Royce Freeman to their roster, a free-agent who joins players like Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn to strengthen the backfield. The search for more talent at this position is in the team’s agenda, potentially including another running back via Draft.

However, the central concern remains the urgent need to strengthen and rejuvenate the offensive line. The departure of key talents has had a negative effect, far outweighing the franchise’s recent acquisitions.

At this critical juncture, a careful strategic approach is needed to ensure the Cowboys’ competitiveness and future success in the 2024 season that does not appear to be generating good expectations.

Former NFL player sees nothing ‘all-in’ about Cowboys

On this past Wednesday’s edition of ESPN’s NFL Live, host Laura Rutledge was joined by analysts and former NFL players to discuss the Cowboys’ current momentum.

Two-time Super Bowl champion Logan Ryan started mentioning the importance of Dak Prescott being able to count on a reliable offensive line and a runner to carry the ball steadily.

“Look, I don’t see you all-in at all and they just haven’t brought anything in, Dak is at his best when he has offensive line play. The offensive line is ageing and when they can run the ball, I don’t see Prime Zeke. I don’t see Tony Pollard. So I’m seeing a lack of a running game around Dak, he wants to get the ball out on time and he doesn’t have the protection to do it,” he claimed.

“They’ve got to play CeeDee, they’ve gotta play Micah – that just has to happen. They don’t have the weapons around Dak. I don’t see anything different coming from the Cowboys this year”, Ryan added.

Dallas has many priorities to be considered in the Draft

Broadcaster and ex-safety Louis Riddick has expressed his displeasure at everything that comes out of the America’s Team organisation.

“The Cowboys knows, Stephen Jones knows, Jerry Jones knows what people are talking about when they say you’re all-in or you’re not all-in. Everybody knows that you would like to re-sign your best players when you draft them and then they wind up coming up for contract. Everybody knows you’d like to go ahead and reward those guys because that means that you wind up drafting the right guys in the first place.

“What we’re talking about is: are you making meaningful additions to your football team to keep pace with what everyone else is doing in your division, in your conference and in the league overall?”, he rhetorically asked.

He continued to point out his arguments by making statements, asking questions and answering all of them.

“Priority number one has got to be this offensive line. They’ve got one starter on the offensive line right now they can count on in terms of playing the position that he plays and that’s Zack Martin, Tyler Smith is moving the left tackle. They’ve got questions at left guard, they’ve got questions at center and I know they’re not going into the season thinking Terrance Steele is gonna hold it down on the right side either.

“So that’s priority number one, number two: what did Derrick Henry say? Derrick Henry said ‘the Cowboys never even talked to me’. They showed no interest. So there goes your running game as far as who do you got in the backfield right now. Now there’s some players in the draft that can help them, but we’ll see.

“And the last thing is this, remember how we have all these conversations about ‘do the Cowboys have a culture problem?’ Look, I don’t know if they have a culture problem. I’m not there. So I don’t really know about that, but I do know this, they got a personnel problem when it comes to playing against the big boys in December and January when the Green Bay Packers decide and the Buffalo Bills decide ‘we’re gonna bully y’all’. Now, what you gonna do about it? So now, I guess Eric Kendricks is the answer and that’s it.”

Possibly, the arrival of new talent from the Draft in Dallas could help give a break to the heated debates about the failings of the franchise.
