ESPN analyst urges Dak Prescott’s Cowboys to learn from Tyreek Hill leaving Chiefs

Owner Jerry Jones is confident that his team, even without external signings, can be successful in 2024.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday brought new information about the Dallas Cowboys’ hopes for Dak Prescott.

Apparently there is a “mutual understanding” between the two parties and that, for now, there will be no extension.

Until this point, owner Jerry Jones had indicated that he had plans to extend the quarterback for a long-term contract, but now the idea appears to be different. Dallas’ general manager thinks it’s still early and will probably wait a while longer to see what the best decision is.

“We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year”, said Jones.

In addition, the Cowboys’ 2024 offseason remains sluggish. An external free-agency signing, a few renewals and plans for new deals with the team’s stars, such as Micah Parsons and Cee Dee Lamb.

Jones, unlike the fans and journalists, is calm and comfortable with the moves the team has made so far: “I feel as good any time going into the offseason as I can remember.”

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones

In the latest edition of ESPN’s First Take show, analysts discussed a controversial speech given by Jerry Jones: “I think that we have been in a situation where we can get it done with lesser.”

The crux of the discussion was whether the GM was asking Prescott to do too much. Bear in mind that in the Cowboys owner’s view, they will go ‘All-in’ in 2024.

Mike Tannebaum stated that Jones is correct in his assumption. The analyst even cited Tyreek Hill as an example of how Dak Prescott can do better this season.

“What ‘All-in’ can mean also is ‘hey, we’re gonna keep Micah Parsons, Cee Dee Lamb’. What they’re asking Dak Prescott to do is the very definition of greatness.”

“Look at Kansas City. Tyreek Hill graduates arguably the best receiver in the NFL. What do they do? They win back-to-back championships, so when more of the money is going to less of the players, you expect your great players to do more, and that’s exactly what Dak Prescott’s job description is.”

What does Dak Prescott becoming a free-agent mean for America’s Team

Dallas, in early March, converted a $5 million roster bonus into a signing bonus, reducing $4 million from Prescott’s salary cap hit. That amount is still a staggering $55.445 million.

The quarterback is in the very last year of his contract and if he doesn’t re-sign with the team, he will become a free-agent in 2025.

For the Cowboys, this isn’t exactly the best of scenarios, because if Prescott no longer plays for America’s Team next year, the franchise will still have to pay him a lot of money. Consequently, the only way for Dallas not to lose out financially is to extend the signal-caller’s contract.
