He’s one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, but things could have been different for Patrick Mahomes had he gone down the baseball route.
Patrick Mahomes II is one of the highest paid NFL players of all-time, and widely regarded as the best QB in the sport.
He guided the team to success in Super Bowl LIV in 2020, also picking up the MVP award in the 20-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers. On Sunday 12 February 2023, he led the Chiefs to their second Super Bowl of the Andy Reid era after beating the Eagles 38-35.
But it could have been different for Mahomes had he not opted to take to the football field.
Mahomes was also a baseball player in his youth. Which position did he play, and which MLB team drafted him to the ranks of professional baseball?

Patrick Mahomes’ baseball career explored
Mahomes’ links to baseball come from his father, Pat Mahomes – who was a pitcher for teams including the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs.
Born in 1995, Mahomes Jr started off in high school playing football, baseball as well as basketball.
He attended Whitehouse High School in his native Texas.
Patrick Mahomes got so good at baseball that various scouts attended his matches to run the rule over the teenager.
His main position was shortstop, although he was also very good with the ball in hand – something of a trait there…
In his senior year, he produced a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts, and was also handy with a bat and in the field.
It was predicted that Patrick Mahomes would be among the first picks in the MLB draft when he was eligible.

Mahomes goes to MLB draft
In 2014, Patrick Mahomes went to the baseball draft – although it was not expected he would be selected to the MLB thanks to his football commitments.
The Detroit Tigers picked him up in the 37th round of the draft, although Mahomes did not sign a deal with them. So sadly, he never actually played an MLB game.
He had already pledged his future to Texas Tech to play college football.
In the 2017 NFL draft, Mahomes was selected as 10th overall by the Chiefs, originally as back-up QB to Alex Smith.
Smith was moved on in 2018, allowing Mahomes to take over the starting QB slot.
Things have gone rather well since then…
