On Sunday, one of the greatest linebackers in Cowboys history will be recognized for his tremendous contributions to the organization.

DeMarcus Ware, who spent nine seasons in Dallas from 2005 to 2013, will be the latest former Cowboy to be inducted into the Ring of Honor when they face the Los Angeles Rams this weekend.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will be on hand to mark the occasion as the 41-year-old native of Auburn, Alabama, joins some elite players to be given such an honor.

DeMarcus Ware deserves it

Ware was drafted 11th overall by the Cowboys in 2005 out of Troy University, where he was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year in 2003.

During his time with the Trojans, he was also a two-time All-Sun Belt in 2003 and 2004 who registered 27.5 sacks, plus 74 quarterback hurries and 10 forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and one interception.

He set a school record regarding tackles for losses at Troy (55.5) and is second in the program’s history for sacks.

In 2012, he was inducted into the Troy University Sports Hall of Fame and was named to the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame two years later.

Ware entered the NFL with something to prove and made an immediate impact with Dallas, amassing 58 tackles in his rookie season while leading the team in sacks (eight).

That was just the beginning for Ware with the Cowboys, though, as he’d go on to terrorize opposing quarterbacks for years to come, registering double-digits for sacks in seven of his final eight seasons with America’s Team.

One day after the Cowboys released Ware in March 2013, he signed a three-year contract with the Denver Broncos for $30 million, $20 million of which was guaranteed.

Ware went on to play three seasons with the Broncos, accumulating 21.5 sacks over that span, plus 80 tackles.

During the 2015 NFL campaign, Ware collected his first and only Super Bowl ring, sacking Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton twice, while he had five tackles in that game as the Broncos won 24-10.

He played just one more season after that in Denver before announcing his retirement in March 2017.

Just over a month later, Ware signed a one-day contract with the Dallas Cowboys, where his NFL career began.

Since his playing career ended, Ware has still been a big part of the Dallas-Fort Worth community, supporting numerous charitable organizations and community programs year-round while also being an active member of the Dallas Cowboys Alumni Association.

Ware was officially named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February, along with Joe Thomas, Darelle Revis, Ronde Barber and five others.

He is the Cowboys all-time leader in sacks (117), forced fumbles (32), tackles for loss (145) and quarterback hits (185).

In his illustrious NFL career, Ware led the league in sacks twice (2008 and 2010), was named to the Pro Bowl nine times and was a First-team All-Pro four times.

He had 138.5 sacks during his years in the NFL with 35 forced fumbles, while registering over 500 tackles (503).

At half-time of Sunday’s game against the Rams, Ware will become the 23rd player in Cowboys history to join the Ring of Honor.
