Dave Toub is excited about a unique offseason prospect on Chiefs special teams

The Kansas City Chiefs are relaxing on their summer break after concluding their offseason program, but special teams coordinator Dave Toub has high expectations for one key rookie.

The NFL announced in the offseason that they would be implementing the XFL-style kickoff rules to encourage returns across the league.

Franchises have adopted a mindset where they are happy to kick the ball out the back of the endzone to prevent a potential touchdown return.

Moreover, some franchises are cautious about a potential fumble or miscue on special teams, therefore, they will advise their returner to call a fair catch.

NFL introduced a new rule that forced Dave Toub to draw up new plans in 2024

So, the NFL has changed the modifications of the kickoff rule to entice teams to run the ball and stop kicking teams pushing the ball out of the endzone.

Kansas City Chiefs special team coordinator Dave Toub has stated that kickers are involved in 25-40% of tackles on the kickoff.

Therefore, Toub has suggested they will not allow Harrison Butker to get into harm’s way and could change the kicker.

Toub is full of praise for Louise Rees-Zammitt, with the player having a key role on special teams

Moreover, the special teams coach has high hopes for International Player’s Pathway program graduate Louis Rees-Zammit.

“He (Zammit) can pass the ball better underhanded than he can overhanded. So, we have a play where he gets the ball as a returner, and either fakes it or tosses it to the other returner… so it’s a quicker more safe pass,” Toub explained at Justin Reid’s charity golf tournament.

“He’s got a lot of tools, he can kick off, he can be a cover guy too, I’m really excited about his prospects this year.”

Toub hints that they can utilize Rees-Zammit in different ways in 2024, regarding the evolving kickoff rules.

Justin Reid and Louis Rees-Zamitt could be in line to replace Harrison Butker

The Welshman was spotted taking kickoffs with Justin Reid at the OTAs and mandatory minicamp. He had entered the league as a receiver/running back but could find a more predominant position on special teams.

Rees-Zammit must make the 53-man roster to have involvement within the special teams, but Toub’s excitement to use him has hinted that his talent could see him make the cut.

The change in rules has forced coaches like Toub to think outside the box and draw up plans for the 2024 season.
