Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is now the Washington Commanders head coach.
The search for a new defensive coordinator in Dallas is officially underway after Dan Quinn switching to a NFC East rival.
It will be the second NFL head coaching job for Quinn, who replaces Ron Rivera in the US capital.
Washington had a 4-13 record in 2023.
The 53-year-old Quinn underwent numerous interviews for NFL head coaching vacancies with the Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles Chargers and Commanders.
Dan Quinn’s prior head coaching experience
Given Quinn’s successes as a head coach, the Cowboys were fortunate to have his defensive expertise for two seasons.
It feels like a long time ago, but Quinn spent just over five seasons as the head coach with the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 until early on in 2020.
He guided the Falcons to a 5-0 start in his first season as head coach before guiding them to the Super Bowl in 2016.

While Atlanta are remembered for squandering the biggest lead in Super Bowl history, blowing a 28-3 advantage to the New England Patriots, the Falcons finished first or second in the NFC South in four of his five seasons in charge.
Quinn was dismissed in 2020 after Atlanta began the season 0-5.
Quinn’s Achievements in Dallas
On January 11, 2021, Quinn became the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator under Mike McCarthy.
In his first season the Cowboys finished first in the NFC East with a 12-5 record, finishing eighth in points allowed per game (21.2) and first regarding takeaways (34).
Quinn’s second year on the job saw Dallas finish third in team sacks (54) and second in turnover differential (+10).
Last season, DaRon Bland led the league in interceptions (nine), with the Cowboys’ defense allowing the fifth-fewest yards per game (299.7).
As Cowboys coordinator, Quinn oversaw the ascension of Bland, Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs as elite cornerbacks.
With Quinn now in Washington, it’ll be up to Mike McCarthy to outwit him with the Commanders facing the Cowboys twice in 2024.
What Cowboy & Commander fans saying about Quinn?
Robert Griffin III, a former #2 draft pick with the Commanders, is excited about Quinn’s hiring.
On X, he discussed how Quinn’s familiarity with the NFC East will help the Commanders next season.
He added: “I personally hope he comes in, calls the defense full time and builds the identity of the team through the way the defense plays. That’s what he is best at and an identity is what the Washington Commanders need.”
Dallas Cowboys fans are happy
Perhaps the playoff loss to the Packers is still fresh in the minds of Cowboy fans because many didn’t seem to have a problem with his departure.
One fan wrote: “Dan Quinn… Trash”, while another added, “Good now hopefully the Cowboys find a DC who practices and runs more zone coverage.”
A third fan wrote: “I actually don’t mind this as a Cowboys fan. Quinn had his moments but the defense never showed up when it mattered most.”
Another boldly declared: “Cowboys are finally Super Bowl bound.”
Looking ahead to next season’s match-ups, one fan wrote: “Well Cowboys definitely got two wins next season thanks to this ridiculous move.”
Another comment read: “As a Dallas fan LETS GOOOOOO.”
Quinn took over the defensive coordinator job in Dallas from Mike Nolan, who was only on the job for the 2020 campaign.
Nolan and Quinn are the only two coordinators who have worked with McCarthy since he became the Cowboys’ head coach in 2020.
Quinn’s also previously worked for the 49ers, Dolphins, Jets, and Seahawks.
He won Assistant Coach of the Year with the Cowboys in 2020.
