Dallas Cowboys “will evolve” says owner Jerry Jones

Fresh off a victory on Monday night, the Dallas Cowboys head into a bye week feeling much better about themselves.

That good feeling is primarily due to their winning record, which should not be overlooked, as 4-2 is much better than 3-3.

While it wasn’t the cleanest of victories against the Chargers, not all games will be masterpieces, and that triumph is perhaps the grittiest win that America’s Team have had this season.

Discipline and capitalizing more on red zone possessions will likely be two points of emphasis for Mike McCarthy’s crew with a week off.

A win is a win

For as much criticism as this team has received since losing to San Francisco and following that up with an unconvincing showing on Monday, the Cowboys owner continues to stand behind his team.

Following their triumph on Monday, Jerry Jones said: “It was a hard-fought game,” said Jones. “They’ve got a good quarterback and good players. We respected them going in. They were everything we thought they’d be. I’m really proud that we got out there and had that kind of win against them.”

Dak Prescott, who’s been in the line of fire over the past couple of weeks amid the struggles, still came away with his best outing of 2023, going 21/30 for 272 yards and a score, while also running for one.

“We did well,” Jones said. “That was an important win for us, and, yes, we did need to win because of the disappointment we had in San Francisco. We’ll use this bye week to really evaluate our first six games. We’re a long way down the road from when we left training camp, and we’ve got a long way to go.”

Speaking of a long road, it may be easy to forget that three of their last four games have been away from home (Arizona, San Francisco and Los Angeles) in the Pacific Time zone.

That’s a lot of travel with little rest, which is part of the game, but to survive that and still have a winning record intact has to feel good.

While he still believes in the team, Jones didn’t shy away from the Cowboys’ deficiencies.

“I think we do have serious room for improvement — we have that,” said Jones. “We’re not yet the team we can be. The major limiting factor for our team to evolve and get better will be availability of players we’re counting on. Injury, principally, is the problem. But if we can stay healthy, we will evolve and get better.

“We have outstanding talent.”

Another thing to point out is that they are one of only six teams in the NFC currently with a winning record heading into this weekend.

They also boast the second-most wins among non-division leaders, so it’s not nearly as doom and gloom as it may seem.

A victory over the Rams in their next encounter, and suddenly, they’ve got a first-place showdown in Philadelphia to begin November.

A few weeks before Thanksgiving in the US, I’d say there’s more to be thankful for than unthankful with this team in 2023.
