In the near future, America’s Team must take its show overseas. When that will happen, though, remains unclear.
Since 2007, the NFL has been holding international games, going to countries like England, Mexico, Germany and, coming next season, Brazil.
Of all the international games played, the Dallas Cowboys have only been a part of the overseas festivities once, defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-17 during a 2014 fixture at London’s Wembley Stadium.
Over the past two years a total of five international encounters have been played, but that number will jump to nine by 2025, with NFL owners voting to expand the international schedule on Wednesday.
The Cowboys have never hosted an international game before, but that is obviously going to change.
Jones Reluctant to Host International Game
While the league and numerous NFL clubs have prospered financially from playing games abroad, it’s not something that Dallas owner Jerry Jones is thrilled about.
On the team’s official website, he explained why he isn’t keen on having his team travel so far away.
“I’m very reluctant to move a home game from here to there,” Jones said about playing internationally.
“We have a lot of fans. It fits for a lot of clubs, it doesn’t fit for the Cowboys as much. We got the highest attendance in the NFL, of course. When we don’t have a game here, it makes a big difference.”
While exposing the team’s brand to outside markets can benefit them in some respects, hosting a game outside of Dallas means they have one fewer contest at AT&T Stadium, and Jones loses money.

Cowboys City of Choice
There is only one foreign city that the Dallas Cowboys owner would be okay with hosting an NFL game in.
“When we aren’t playing here, I want to be in Mexico City,” Jones said.
“Period. Mexico City is good and close. If I’m going international, I want to play in Mexico City. Mainly because of our fans and our following and the affinity that we get here back home in the United States.”
“When we go there on any basis, we increase the affinity for the Cowboys with our Hispanic fan base in the United States. That’s where we want to be.”
While Jones is reluctant to host an international affair, he doesn’t mind going abroad as the visiting team.
“We don’t want to give a home game up to go play a game someplace else,” he said.
“We can make it work under certain circumstances when we’re the visiting team. We can make that work. If we do give up anything, I want it to be Mexico.”
Interestingly, Jones also discussed why Dallas will not host the 2027 Super Bowl.
There was a time when you had to play overseas to earn a Super Bowl bid.
Jones however doesn’t see that as a hindrance to having the big game return to Dallas soon.
“At one time, it was kind of there,” he said. “Official or not. That hasn’t come up with us at this time.”
SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles will host the 2027 Super Bowl.
Dallas last hosted the Super Bowl in 2010.
