Cowboys forced to compete with Super Bowl champions in pursuit of a free agent

Jerry Jones has been alarmingly quiet in the free agency market and the Dallas Cowboys could have been handed a major blow to their recent player aspirations.

As it stands, the Dallas Cowboys have recruited just three outside free agents, with their latest being an old fan-favorite Ezekiel Elliott.

Stephen Jones blamed the cap space for their limitations in pursuing key targets this offseason.

Contracts for key players Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons have handicapped the franchise into making bold moves.

However, the Cowboys CEO has stated that the front office will maximize their salary cap just like they do ‘every year’.

Dallas has shown their intention of signing free agent Zay Jones

Dallas is in pursuit of landing wide receiver Zay Jones after the AFC’s Jacksonville Jaguars released him.

The ‘market has been heating up’ for the free agent with numerous clubs bidding for his signature.

Jones, if healthy, would be a fantastic addition to the Cowboys’ wide receiving department.

After Michael Gallup failed to reach the expectations set out for him, the franchise cut him to save $9.5 million on the cap.

The now-Las Vegas Raiders star signed a five-year $62.5 million extension as a WR2 to CeeDee Lamb in 2022.

Despite playing all 17 games in 2023, the 28-year-old failed to reach the 500 receiving yard marker.

Zay Jones grew up in Dallas and his father won three rings with the franchise

Zay Jones is also the son of former Cowboys linebacker Robert Jones, who was part of the historical dynasty that won three Super Bowls in four years.

Furthermore, Zay Jones grew up in the City of Dallas, so the stars could be aligned for a homecoming.

Yet, the Cowboys could have been dealt a massive blow in their pursuit of the 29-year-old.

Cowboys forced to compete with the reigning Super Bowl champions

Per Adam Schefter, the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, will be hosting the man in demand today.

With the future of Rashee Rice in 2024 uncertain, the Chiefs could be looking to secure another weapon for Patrick Mahomes.

Before America’s Team, Jones had visited the Arizona Cardinals and the Tennessee Titans.

Dallas let Jones walk out the door and when the Chiefs come knocking it will be hard to turn them down.

Jones will bide his time in free agency and will entertain approaches from all teams, Dallas may have let the hometown talent slip through their fingers.
