Cowboys expected to make Dak Prescott the highest paid NFL Quarterback this Offseason

One of the leading MVP candidates will reportedly be with the Dallas Cowboys for the foreseeable future.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport says that the team could be making a sizable investment in quarterback Dak Prescott this offseason.

Dak and teammate DaRon Bland captured the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Month Awards for November, with the Cowboys QB already exceeding his passing totals from 2022 (3,234 this season and 2,860 last season).

While Bland floundered on Thursday night against DK Metcalf and the Seahawks, Prescott flourished, tossing three touchdowns, finishing November with 16 scores through the air and just one interception.

At the moment, Prescott is easily playing the best football of his career, throwing for multiple scores in six consecutive games, 20 altogether over that stretch, the most in franchise history in that time frame since 1970.

Following another victory on Thursday, Prescott said that all the naysayers are fueling him.

“I understand nobody’s opinion defines me; that’s the great part about life, and that’s the great opportunity that we all have, that people can say whatever they want, but you know I have the pen, I have the paper, and I’m the one writing.”

“So, because I’m playing as well as I am now doesn’t mean I’m going to stop, doesn’t mean I’m going to listen to them now.”

What would a Dak extension mean for the Cowboys’ budget

Prescott is in the third year of a four-year deal with the Cowboys, which expires after the 2024 campaign and currently includes a no-trade and no-franchise tag clause.

While the Dallas pivot is earning every penny of his current deal, a new one could be expensive for owner Jerry Jones.

Rapoport says Prescott is due a $5 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the new league year.

That means a potential extension for Dak will likely happen before that deadline.

Right now, Prescott is carrying a $59.455 million hit against the cap in 2024, which is the final year of his four-year, $160 million deal signed in 2021.

That kind of cap hit would make it difficult for Jones to shop for new players during free agency.

Also on Jones’ to-do list is working on long-term extensions for CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons, who will each become unrestricted free agents in 2025.

Lamb’s cap hit this season is over $4 million, with Parsons’ being over $5 million in 2025.

Prescott playing his way into a new contract

Ahead of the 2023 regular season, the salaries of many high-profile NFL quarterbacks began to skyrocket.

Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts were each the highest-paid players at their position for a time during the previous off-season.

Per The Sporting News, the Bengals’ injured QB “Joe Cool” (Burrow) is the highest-earning pivot this season at $55 million.

Meanwhile, Over the Cap has Prescott at #12 regarding total value among NFL quarterbacks.

That puts Dak in a three-way tie alongside the Giants’ Daniel Jones and Matthew Stafford of the Rams at a value of $160 million.
