Chiefs seventh-round pick reaches impressive 100 points scored in his career

If there’s one Kansas City Chief who you can always count on to put points on the board this season, it’d be their kicker.

While the offense has been hot and cold, primarily the latter in recent outings, when Harrison Butker marches onto the field, Andy Reid can rest assured the Chiefs will score points.

Butker didn’t hear his name called at the 2017 NFL Draft until the Carolina Panthers chose him in round seven at #233.

He came to KC off the Panthers practice squad later that year and has been a mainstay for this team ever since.

Butker Keeping it 100

If only field goals counted for more than three points, the Chiefs would be in a much better position in the AFC.

A 27-yard field goal from Butker on Sunday was all KC could muster in the fourth quarter, with the Chiefs losing for a second successive week.

That chip-shot kick was the 100th point scored by Butker this year.

Butker and Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys are the only two kickers in the NFL this season with at least 10 field goal attempts to make them all.

However, Aubrey has missed three extra points, while Butker is 31/31 in that department and 23/23 on field goals.

It marks the sixth straight season that Butker’s scored at least 100+ points, moving him ahead of Jan Stenerud, with the Hall of Fame Norwegian only reaching the century mark five times in his KC career.

Stenerud scored 1,699 career points, the second-most at the time of his retirement in 1985, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Stenerud reached that total in 19 NFL seasons, 13 with the Chiefs, making 279 field goals in KC and 394 extra points for 1,231 points.

Butker has 863 points for KC all-time in his seventh NFL season, over 50% of Stenerud’s all-time NFL total.

Nick Lowery‘s all-time franchise record of 11 successive seasons with at least 100 points in KC colors is safe for the foreseeable future.

Seeking Perfection

Booting the game-winning field goal to win both the AFC Championship and Super Bowl last season, Butker knows how to deal with pressure.

With just four regular-season games remaining, he could achieve something few kickers have ever done and something no Chiefs’ kickers ever managed to do.

In NFL history, only three kickers have ever made every field goal attempt in a single season (with 20 attempts minimum).

Mike Vanderjagt did it with the Colts in 2003 (37/37), Gary Anderson in 1998 in Minnesota (35/35) and Jason Myers for the Seahawks in 2020 (24/24).

Two more players could join the list this season: Aubrey and Butker.

If Butker can go the rest of the season without missing, he’d join Gary Anderson as the only other kicker to make all of his field goals and extra points in one regular season.

Sadly though, most fans will remember Anderson for missing a field goal in the 1998 NFC Championship Game, with his Vikings losing to the Atlanta Falcons in overtime.

One thing that the Chiefs kicker has over all of those names, though, is a Super Bowl ring.

Meanwhile it shouldn’t be long before Butker earns his first selection to the Pro Bowl.
