Chiefs fans are reacting to Kansas City mayor’s comment about ‘restarting the Border War truce’

Although the legal bureaucracy regarding the future of the Arrowhead Stadium is underway, there is nothing definite yet as to whether the venue will be moved to another location.

In April 2024, Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt proposed a sales tax increase for residents of Jackson County, Missouri, aiming to finance renovations for Arrowhead Stadium.

However, a poll indicated that 60% of voters opposed the proposal. In response, KC president Mark Donovan has signaled openness to exploring other options, including potential offers from outside sources, to provide top-tier facilities for both the Chiefs and the MLB’s Royals.

What’s at stake now

This past Tuesday, the Kansas House of Representatives decisively passed a measure allowing the use of STAR bonds (Sales Tax and Revenue bonds) with a vote of 84 to 38.

In a significant financial move, Kansas has signaled its intent to subsidize the relocation of the Chiefs and Royals teams by covering 70% of the costs for constructing a new stadium and training facilities.

The bill is now the responsibility of Governor Laura Kelly, who says she has no reason to disapprove the measure.

On the same day that the senate vote was passed, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas spoke to KMBC journalist Nick Sloan about the effects that moving the teams to Kansas could provoke.

“I will note that is regrettable that we saw the vote in the Kansas legislature a restart of Border War truce,” said. “As I understand the economic incentive border war we don’t have some exception where anything cool that wasn’t explicitly written is exempted from.”

He then elaborated: “I think that is regrettable. I think it’s short sighted and I think the reinitiation of the border war between Kansas and Missouri long term will be bad for taxpayers in the Kansas City Metro. If you want any such example, look at this very discussion where people are asking will Missouri copy the exact same taxes that are tools to us.”

What the Kansas City Chiefs fans think of all this

Since the Mayor’s statement appeared on social media, Chiefs Kingdom and even NFL fans in general have spoken out.

Ty Patton (@ty_patton): “In all seriousness, I don’t understand this “Border War” stuff. Kansas isn’t trying to poach the Chiefs and Royals. KCMo voted resoundingly that they weren’t interested in keeping them. Kansas is willing to keep them from moving to Nashville or Salt Lake City. You’re welcome.”

Mason Voth (@TheRealMasonV): “‘Hey we are all in this together, you guys aren’t allowed to have them. Only we are.’ Loser talk.”

Ellie Meinen (@emein5): “I hate this line they’re churning out. How is it a restart of the Border War in that context when Missouri already put it to a vote and rejected it? Is Kansas supposed to do nothing and hope Missouri figures something out and the teams don’t move? Be for real.”

El Grande Gato (@ELxGRANDExGATO): “It’s not really a war if only one side is fighting.”

Cody Tapp (@codybtapp): “Honest question. Did Missouri honestly think that Kansas wouldn’t go after the Chiefs and Royals just because a truce from five years ago?”
