The Kansas City Chiefs have signed a very experienced veteran quarterback to be Patrick Mahomes’ backup.
Carson Wentz, in his ninth season in the NFL, has experienced many ups and downs: he’s played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams… a signal-caller who has been through many squads and has a lot to tell.
The QB’s heyday was with the Eagles, the team that drafted him and where he stayed for five seasons. In Philly, he was named to the Pro Bowl, was an MVP candidate and won a Super Bowl.
At the age of 31, he may be experiencing one of the most demanding tasks of his career: being Patrick Mahomes’ backup.

The relationship between Wentz and Mahomes
Wentz has a one-year contract with Kansas City and has already been experiencing the team’s training sessions from the start. It’s important that he builds bonds with the players, especially Mahomes.
The North Dakota product said last week that he is committed to helping the team and the starting quarterback in any way he can – on and off the field.
“Pat and I already have a great relationship that’ll keep growing, and we’ll keep finding ways that I can help. The dude has been playing at an extremely high level for a while, so I’ll try to find a way to help in whatever way I can, whether that’s off the field, on the field, or whatever. I’m just here to help and support.”
Last year at the Rams, Wentz wasn’t a starter, but he said he still finds it a little strange to be settled in the backup position.
“It’s definitely different, but at the end of the day, I’m still approaching it to be ready,” explained. “I’m trying to learn as much as I can, as quick as I can, formulate a relationship with all these guys and just keep getting better on the field. That’s the mindset you have to have in this league. You got to always be ready to go when called upon.”
He added: “So, that’s no different in that regard, but you go out to practice, and you’re with the twos, or you’re going scout team, that’s different. But I’m just trying to get better and take it one day at a time.”
Why Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are so special
Despite being a veteran and having been in the NFL for longer, Carson Wentz’s 2024 has everything it takes to be a unique experience.
He joined the defending champions and will now be part of the historic mission to win the three-peat.
The former Eagles player spoke about Mahomes and what he can do on the pitch: “Just seeing him live in practice, he just processes the game really quick,” claimed. “You can see that coming in with the way he calls out protections, he’s in and out of the huddle, he’s throwing anticipatory throws, like all that stuff, you see from afar, but it’s just fun to see it. In some respect, you see different windows on plays that maybe you didn’t see before because he’s just playing so quick out there. It’s fun to see from back there.”
Wentz further elaborated the feeling of being in KC.
“I love it. I mean, just the culture, the values, everything that me and my wife, our family kind of stand on just kind of makes us feel right at home,” Wentz revealed. “The fan base, I’ve played at Arrowhead a couple times, and I appreciate the fan base now on my side. And so, it’s definitely been a cool city to get to know in my first six weeks here. I look forward to continue to explore it and be a part of the city.”
