Brandon Aubrey just made history in Cowboys win over the Eagles

When the season began, plenty of eyebrows were raised about the Dallas Cowboys kicking game.

Understandably so, given Brandon Aubrey came from a soccer background, being drafted by MLS side Toronto FC years ago.

Mike McCarthy and the team didn’t trust Brett Maher, for good reason, after his numerous missed extra points versus Tampa Bay in the Wild Card Round last season.

However, what Aubrey has been able to do when called upon this season is truly remarkable.

Automatic Aubrey

Winning the Special Teams Player of the Month for October reflected how well Brandon Aubrey’s fulfilled his kicking duties to this point of the campaign.

Coming into this season without any NFL experience as a 28-year-old rookie, Aubrey surely knew he had to earn the trust of Cowboy fans.

Aside from missing a few extra points, it’s clear McCarthy’s got complete confidence in the rookie kicker after what we saw on Sunday.

He’s now 30 of 30 on field goal attempts this season, the first kicker in NFL history to do so at the beginning of his career.

Aubrey isn’t getting lucky bounces on his field goal attempts or just squeaking them through either; quite the contrary, he’s making them with ease.

His field goals against the Eagles ultimately helped put that game out of reach, and it has Dallas ahead of them for the division as the Cowboys have more wins against the NFC East.

Making kicks inside a dome stadium helps as there’s no wind factor or field conditions to worry about.

However Aubrey still deserves credit where credit it due.

Going the Distance

In the early going of the 2023 campaign, you could argue that Aubrey hadn’t made any difficult kicks.

Just about any kicker should be able to knock it through from 40 yards or closer, and Aubrey made all of his attempts from that distance and a few from a little further out.

On Sunday, though, McCarthy wasn’t afraid to risk sending his rookie out for some long attempts which could’ve given the Eagles great field position had they missed.

Leading 7-0 late in the opening quarter, Aubrey lined up for a 60-yard attempt and put it right down the pipe, seemingly with some distance to spare.

He had no problem knocking another one through in the third quarter from 59 yards away.

He rounded out the scoring with the only points by either team in the fourth quarter, making field goals from 45 and 50 yards, respectively.

With his 59-yard kick in the third quarter, Aubrey became the first NFL kicker to knock through two field goals from 59 yards or further in the same game.

Greg Zuerlein and Harrison Butker held the record previously, each making a pair of kicks from 58 yards away in one contest.

Overall, Aubrey is 39 of 42 for extra points and 30 for 30 on field goals this season.

He and the Chiefs Harrison Butker are the only kickers with at least 20 attempts in the NFL this season to have made all their field goals, while Butker’s converted all his extra points.
