From a defender registered to Toronto FC in the MLS to the most prolific kicker in the 2023 NFL season; Brandon Aubrey has been on quite the journey.

The 28-year-old finished the most recent NFL season with the best field goal percentage for all starting kickers (94.7%), even pipping future Hall of Famer Justin Tucker for the top-spot.

Brandon Aubrey made his presence felt instantly within the league, as the ex-soccer star made his first 31 field goals for the Dallas Cowboys.

Additionally, Aubrey became the highest points scorer ever by a rookie kicker after signing his first NFL contract only a matter of months before on the 6^th of July, 2023.

Brandon Aubrey soccer career

Brandon Aubrey played professional soccer for Toronto FC, where he played as a centre-back.

He was picked in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft first round, with the 21st overall pick.

However, he did not establish himself as a first team player for Toronto, instead playing for their second string side, Toronto II, where he made 21 competitive appearances.

His teammates include Brenden Aaronson, a USMNT international regular, who played in the Premier League with Leeds United, now on loan in the Bundesliga with Union Berlin.

Aaronson and Aubrey played together 11 times. After falling out of favour at Toronto, Aubrey moved to Bethlehem Steel where he managed just 26 appearances. He officially retired from the sport in 2018.

Brandon Aubrey Journey to the NFL

Prior to his soccer career, the St Louis native earned a degree in software engineering, which he used after his soccer career came to a halt.

Being a Dallas Cowboys fan during his childhood, Aubrey was a religious watcher of the NFL. Inspired to start working on his kicking career, he teamed up with ex-special teams coach, Brian Egan, practising three times a week alongside his software engineering job.

Egan had connections with the Dallas Cowboys, previously working on Jason Garrett’s coaching staff – while having regular contact with Dak Prescott.

The Cowboys quarterback was impressed with Aubrey’s raw ability when he visited one of Egan’s training sessions, setting up a kicking competition to win $200 – Aubrey won.

In 2022, Aubrey was selected by the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL, as the 260^th pick in their draft.

The Cowboys invited Aubrey to their training camp in preparation for the 2023 season, with special teams coach John Fasel seeing the potential – reuniting with Prescott.

Brandon Aubrey Salary

Rivalling former New England Patriot kicker Tristan Vizcaino for the kicking responsibilities. Aubrey won the right to be the Cowboys main kicker and signed a three-contract worth $2,695,000.

Whilst at Toronto FC he earned $65,000 per season, which is a fraction compared to his guaranteed, first season base salary totalling $750,000.
