Arrowhead below freezing temperature and wind chill latest for Kansas City Chiefs wildcard tie with Miami Dolphins

We could see one of the coldest NFL games ever when Kansas City Chiefs host the Miami Dolphins on Wildcard Weekend.

One of the criticisms of the Miami Dolphins is that the team who peaked early on this NFL season are not a ‘cold weather team’.

That is going to put to the test this weekend when the Dolphins visit Arrowhead for the most exciting game of Wildcard Weekend, the opening round of the NFL Play-offs against Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs.

It will not be a normal game. Kansas City is experiencing very wintry conditions, which could make the field appear something similar to an ice rink.

How cold is Arrowhead, Kansas City

The National Weather Service is reporting Saturday’s temperature will be a high of seven Fahrenheit. That equates to -13 Celsius.

It adds: “Wind chill values between -12 and -17. West northwest wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.”

These factors mean a ‘Hazardous Weather Warning’ has been issued, with drivers urged to be careful on slippery local roads.

There is subsequently expected to be a chance of snow on Sunday night.

The freezing temperatures mean Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and co will be in for a tough game, and also means the team’s drop-heavy receivers might find it even tougher to reel in their catches.

And it has to be wondered, will Taylor Swift decide to stay at home in the warm to watch this one?

What is the Kansas City Chiefs coldest game ever

CBS Sports report the game has a chance to be the coldest ever game for both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins.

The coldest NFL game in recent seasons was played at 5 degrees Fahrenheit in 2016 when the Seahawks beat the Vikings 10-9. Bear in mind that the forecast of 7 is a ‘high’, and there is a chance this weekend’s game could break that.

The Chiefs coldest game ever, per Pro Football Reference, came in 1983 against the Bears. That was played at a temperate of 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit, which is ‘in play’ to break that record this weekend if there is a sudden dip.

If you are planning on attending the game, wrap up warm. As to what it could do to the players themselves, do not expect a high scoring affair, with the wind chill factor making the temperature seem even colder.

Coldest ever NFL game

The coldest ever NFL game was recorded back in 1967, between the Packers and Dallas, which became known as the Ice Bowl, played in temperatures of -13, with the NFL reporting there was also a wind chill of -48 at Lambeau Field that day.
